Job Summary Responsible for directing the safe and reliable real-time operation of the Bryan Texas Utilities ( BTU ) transmission and distribution system grids and ensuring the connectivity of the Bulk Electric System ( BES ), including monitoring the transmission facilities and electrical power supply and executing switching.
Essential Job Functions - Responsible for understanding, applying, and complying with all applicable NERC standards and ERCOT protocols.
- Monitors the BTU transmission system to ensure all applicable North American Electrical Reliability Council ( NERC ) standards and ERCOT Protocols are followed.
- Ensures the safe and reliable real-time operation of the BTU transmission system and also helps ensure the connectivity of the BES by monitoring the operating limits, developing contingency plans and directing switching operations.
- Monitors reactive reserve requirements to ensure resource availability meets system needs, both in real-time and hour/day ahead.
- Writes, reviews, coordinates, and directs switching activities and scheduled outages to ensure they have no negative impact on the needs of the BTU transmission system grid.
- Coordinates with ERCOT and with neighboring Transmission Operators/Utilities to alleviate System Operating Limits ( SOL ) and Interconnection Reliability Operating Limits ( IROL ) to protect the integrity of the BTU transmission system grid.
- During normal and emergency conditions, takes or directs timely and appropriate real-time actions such as shedding of firm load to prevent or alleviate SOL and IROL violations.
- Takes real-time actions to restore customer load and BTU transmission system assets following a disturbance.
- Directs the implementation of black-start and system restoration procedures, which may include directing and coordinating restoration activities with neighboring Transmission Operators.
- Responds regularly and promptly to work.
- Assumes additional responsibilities/duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED , plus a minimum of 2 years additional training or education in area of specialization, which could be the equivalent of an Associate’s degree.
- Must possess at least five (5) years of work experience, including at least three (3) years directly related to the electric industry or a similar field.
- Must have demonstrated satisfactory performance and experience as a System Operator in Training or equivalent.
Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements - Must possess NERC Certification as a Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator.
- Must be able to work rotating 12 hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to physically respond to BTU’s Dispatch Center within 30 minutes of contact when needed for emergency assistance.
