    As an intern within the Interior Design Unit (IDU), you will have the opportunity to build for a stronger tomorrow by applying your diverse background, education, and work experiences to generating design-oriented space solutions that align with agency programmatic needs, assisting in project planning, and reviewing construction documents from a design perspective.

The internship schedule is flexible at 20-40 hours per week.

    This position is with the Office of Administration Division of Facilities Management, Design, and Construction’s (OA-FMDC) Design and Construction team, supporting IDU. OA-FMDC is committed to strengthening the State’s investments while providing a safe and secure environment through innovative design solutions and excellent customer service.

    FMDC Vision - Building for a Stronger Tomorrow (BFAST)

    • Prioritize excellent customer service for a wide and diverse network of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to internal teams, state agencies, state officials, contractors, and the public.
    • Attend meetings with client agencies to develop facility-related goals for office renovations, ranging from single cubicle revisions to large-scale office and suite layout remodels.
    • Support the IDU team with translating facility goals into drawings and specifications for facility-related construction projects.
    • Utilize AutoCAD design and drafting software to create and revise construction drawings used in the procurement of construction services.
    • Gain experience by assisting with the review and inspection of drawings, buildings, and facilities to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
    • Assist in project planning and review of construction documents from a design perspective.
    • Collaborate with client agencies and contractors throughout the construction process to ensure projects are completed on time, on budget, and meet the goals and expectations of the client agency.
    • Learn to perform field verifications of facilities to define facility projects, develop accurate scopes of work, and reduce unforeseen conditions.


    • Ability to communicate, collaborate, and lead with integrity in a manner that inspires trust and builds positive rapport with a diverse group of stakeholders and the public.
    • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program or in a technical or vocational college.
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD software.
    • Ability to interpret plans and specifications and understand basic design concepts.
    • Excellent time management, organizational, planning, and communication skills.
    • Excellent attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, conflict management, and critical thinking skills.
    • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from Missouri or from an adjacent state if you reside outside of Missouri.


    Preferred Field(s) of Study

    • Interior Design;
    • Design/Drafting; or
    • Architecture/Engineering.

This may include background checks involving a candidate's name and/or fingerprints and other screenings as needed for the specific position. Authorization to work in the United States is a prerequisite of employment. The Office of Administration will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the individual selected or the position is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., shift, security, or years of service), it will be added to the total compensation in your paycheck. A pay differential does not raise your base pay.

    *This position is physically demanding. Examples of job duties may include prolonged periods of walking/standing/sitting/bending/driving, climbing ladders, ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, working in inclement weather and working on uneven or elevated surfaces. This list is not all inclusive, but a general representation of duties that may be encountered in this position, however other duties may be assigned contingent upon business needs. Please note, this position is considered a “Category 2” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), meaning the incumbent will be compensated for overtime (hours actually worked over forty hours in a workweek) at the rate of time and one-half.
