DescriptionUnder general supervision, performs skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled work assisting the Town’s Journeyman Electrician while receiving on-the-job training to develop skills in electrical work, safety procedure, and code compliance. May participate in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems. May be responsible for a variety of labor-intensive tasks as required. May participate in work in such trades as carpentry, painting, plumbing, irrigation, electrical and/or heating and air conditioning as required. May assist in tasks using knowledge, skills, computer methods and technology as they relate to the commercial/industrial electrical systems. Reports to Assistant Director, Division Supervisor or designee.
Minimum Requirements (Must meet by the closing date of the posting unless otherwise stated)- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years’ experience in general building maintenance.
- Special training, certification or experience in electrical maintenance is preferred.
- Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
- Must have a good overall driving history.
- Must not have had a suspended license within five years of submission of an application unless it was insurance related.
- Possession of a valid Class “A” or “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), issued by the State of Florida within six (6) months of employment.
Essential Functions- Assist in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of a variety of electrical fixtures, systems, equipment, and related components in compliance with applicable codes.
- Performs, under the guidance of the Town’s Journeyman Electrician, various semi-skilled and manual work functions associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment, such as assisting troubleshoot electrical problems, replacing breakers and fuses, replacing defective wiring, assisting in removing/installing breaker panels and covers, installing/replacing/repairing indoor/outdoor lighting fixtures, installing electrical receptacles/switches, installing electrical equipment, assisting in repairing/wiring electrical motors, installing/maintaining exhaust fans/systems, assisting in repairing fire alarm systems, installing smoke detectors, assisting setting up sound systems or special event equipment, assisting in repairing service feeders, digging trenches, running wires/cables, bending conduit, installing conduits, changing ballasts, or replacing bulbs/batteries.
- May assist the Town’s Journeyman Electrician test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components; inspects/tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs, or replacements as appropriate; reports problem situations.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems and fixtures, which may include a utility vehicle, bucket truck, lift, trencher, drill, hole punch, conduit bender, pipe threader, fish tape, gauges, meters, electrical tools, mechanic tools, or diagnostic instruments.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
- May assist the Town’s Journeyman Electrician prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, electrical test data, charts, graphs, schematics, diagrams, or other documents.
- Participates and train in the review of various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, invoices, meter readings, diagnostic reports, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, blueprints, maps, specifications, codes, rules, regulations, material safety data sheets, manuals, catalogs, directories, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, electrical inspectors, vendors/suppliers, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
- Respond to emergency calls during and/or after work hours.
- Activates before, during, and after an emergency event.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS - Performs various tasks associated with Public Works assets maintenance or building maintenance activities based on department needs.
- Progress from basic task to more complex electrical work as skill and knowledge grow.
- Performs manual tasks associated with department projects, which may include hanging/mounting items, moving furniture, installing shelving, or digging trenches.
- Provides assistance or coverage to other employees as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.
