GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Resource Manager and in coordination with the Regional Interpretive Specialist, Assistant Park Superintendent, and Park Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) state park operations work including interpretation and the preservation of Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Promotes conservation and stewardship of natural and cultural resources. Responsible for interpreting the park's historical significance and biodiversity to varied audiences. Researches, plans, and conducts interpretive programs, tours, hikes, special events, and promotes outreach programs with schools, civic groups, scouts, and other organizations. Assists with the park's public outreach effort. Assists with the park's promotional efforts through social media and other outlets. Assists with managing the park's volunteer program, including both day volunteers and park hosts. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

NOTE: Temporary position may fluctuate between full-time/part-time hours based on operational needs.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience:

No experience required.

Licensure:

Must possess a valid state driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Park Administration, Recreation and Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Geology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or closely related field.

Experience:

Experience in customer service.

Experience in park operations.

Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs.

Licensure:

Currently a Certified Interpretive Guide, Certified Interpretive Host, or possession of a similar certification from the National Association for Interpretation (NAI).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of natural and cultural resources management.

Knowledge of special event planning and implementation.

Knowledge of basic mathematics.

Knowledge of park operations and maintenance practices.

Knowledge of the principles of park administration.

Knowledge of methods of interpretation and education.

Knowledge of standard financial and business management principles.

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

Skill in effective interpretive techniques, program preparation, and presentations.

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

Skill in planning, organizing and implementing public presentations and guided tours for various age groups.

Skill in facilitating meetings.

Skill in general maintenance techniques.

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities.

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work in a public park with overnight camping and day use.

Required to work 10 to 40 hours per week, including various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

This position will fluctuate between part-time and full-time status throughout the term of employment. Changing from part-time to full-time and vice versa may impact the amount of leave accrued, eligibility for longevity pay, and health insurance rates.

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

May be required to operate a State vehicle.

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
