The Government of Mariposa County is defined and authorized under the California Constitution and law as a general law county. The County government is composed of the Board of Supervisors, which has legislative and executive power. It is composed of five members elected from the five separate districts of the County, on a non-partisan basis, to serve four-year staggered terms. The County has a $123 million total budget with a General Fund budget of $55 million and 400 authorized positions.

The County currently has 22 Departments with half of these appointed in an at will capacity by the Board of Supervisors. The other 11 are elected by the public or appointed outside of the Board of Supervisors.
