Westlands Water District was formed in 1952 upon petition of landowners in the area who urgently needed surface water supply and, in 1961, signed a joint-venture agreement with the State of California for federal construction of the San Luis Unit of the Central Valley Project. Today the District administers and delivers water from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Central Valley Project to farmers and landowners within its boundaries and operates and maintains the distribution and delivery facilities including 1,034 miles of underground pipe and 3,300 water meters.
