Extra Help Animal Care Technician

Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.
Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then you if you wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online. Current vacancy is with the Health and Human Services Agency located in Visalia. The anticipated life of the list is six months.

Typical Duties

• Feed and provide water to animals at the shelter
• Bathe and groom animals
• Move animals from kennels and cages, clean kennels and cages
• Assist with and administer vaccines and medications
• Assist with animal euthanasia

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

Education:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade or enrollment in a C-SET or other qualifying employment program.

Experience:

• None

Knowledge of:

• Basic animal care and handling techniques.
• Basic animal breeds and characteristics.
• Safe work practices related to the handling and care of animals and facilities maintenance.
• General principles and methods of communication equipment and operations.
• Principles and processes for providing customer service.
• Basic mathematics.
• Correct use of the English language including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
• Alphabetical and numerical filing system and procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

• Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers.
• Operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
• Learn, apply and follow appropriate rules, policies, procedures, and ordinances including those related to the licensing, adoption, quarantine, impounding, care and treatment of animals.
• Input data and utilize a computer-aided dispatch system.
• Organize work, determine priorities, exercise sound judgment, and complete multiple tasks with deadlines under stressful conditions.
• Follow safe work practices and use protective equipment as directed and trained.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

• Provide appropriate maintenance care to impounded animals.

• Exhibit humane and sympathetic treatment of animals.
• Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
• Safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Work in a loud environment while exposed to animals, animal fluids, waste and smells, and pharmaceuticals.
• Retain and recall information.
• Lift and carry animals that cannot or will not walk.
• Correctly perform euthanasia of animals.
• Work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.

License or Certificate:

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be immunized against rabies within three (3) months of start date and maintain immunity for the duration of employment.

DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Experience:

• One (1) year of paid or volunteer experience working with animals such as at a pet store or animal shelter.

Conditions of Employment

Candidates selected may be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. Additionally, a background investigation may also be conducted, which may include a re-investigation every 10 years for some positions. An Employment Eligibility Verification using E-Verify may be required on the first day of employment for some positions. Some job classes may also require a physical exam.
