Description This position is open for current Regular Full Time Charleston County Employees Only. Assists the Facility Technical Maintenance Manager with oversight of building maintenance staff and daily operations for the Charleston County Detention Center, Juvenile Detention Center, Bond Court, Tri-County Biological Science Center, and associated secure facilities. Ensures all systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with County policies, life-safety standards, and security requirements.
HIRING SALARY:$60,840 - $79,684 (Estimated Annual Salary) Application Deadline: Sunday, May 31, 2026.Duties and ResponsibilitiesOversees daily facility operations within a 24/7 secure detention environment. Coordinates maintenance activities across HVAC, plumbing, electrical, life-safety systems, security hardware, and building automation systems (BMS).
Assigns and tracks work orders, ensures preventive maintenance is completed, and monitors work quality. Supervises trades technicians, provides direction, evaluates performance, and supports skill development. Coordinates vendors and contractors, including scheduling, access, and quality assurance. Ensures compliance with detention security procedures, including escorting and restricted access protocols.
Maintains communication with leadership regarding project status, system performance, and operational risks. Supports budget tracking, invoice review, and procurement coordination. Responds to emergencies, system failures, and after-hours events as required.
This position is designated as an essential employee and must report during inclement weather and emergency activations to support 24/7 operations, including extended hours and on-site coverage as required.
Position Requires:
Ability to lead and manage a facilities maintenance team in a high-security, high-demand environment. Strong communication skills with internal staff, detention personnel, contractors, and leadership. Ability to manage multiple priorities, maintain operational continuity, and enforce safety and security standards. Must ensure all work aligns with the County’s ‘Cool, Safe, Dry, and Efficient’ operational standards.
Minimum QualificationsAssociate’s Degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, or Business preferred, with five (5) to seven (7) yearsor more of experience in Commercial or Industrial Facilities Maintenance. Experience in secure or institutional environments is preferred. Knowledge of construction methods, project management, and work order systems is required. Strong leadership and team development skills required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
Preferred Experience:Experience working in detention centers, correctional facilities, or other high-security environments. Hands-on experience with building automation systems, including Desigo BMS. Proven experience managing contractors within controlled or restricted-access environments. Experience overseeing life-safety systems, including fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Demonstrated ability to lead teams in a 24/7 operational setting and respond effectively to emergency situations

Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across multiple trades. Experience with building automation systems (BMS), life-safety systems, and security infrastructure preferred. Excellent customer service and communication skills required. Ability to manage vendor performance and ensure compliance with contract requirements. Must pass a SLED background check, pre-employment medical physical, and drug screening. Position requires prolonged standing, walking, and climbing, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. A valid South Carolina driver’s license is required.
