Job Description:

This position is responsible for surface preparation, abrasive blasting, and application of protective marine coatings aboard ships, tanks, and industrial shipyard structures. The Marine Spray Painter/Blaster ensures all surfaces are properly cleaned, prepared, and coated in accordance with work specifications, safety standards, and marine industry requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare all types of shipboard and industrial surfaces for preservation and coating application.
  • Remove old paint, rust, scale, grease, and debris from steel and other substrates using scraping, chipping, sanding, and mechanical methods.
  • Operate 3,000–5,000 PSI pressure washing equipment to clean surfaces prior to coating.
  • Operate ultra-high-pressure (up to 40,000 PSI) water jetting equipment for advanced surface preparation.
  • Perform abrasive blasting operations to achieve required surface profile and cleanliness standards.
  • Mix solvents, coatings, and paints accurately according to manufacturer specifications and work requirements.
  • Apply protective coatings in accordance with technical specifications, marine standards, and good shipyard practice.
  • Perform brush, roll, and spray application techniques to ensure proper coverage and finish.
  • Install and maintain environmental controls such as containment, ventilation, and protective barriers during blasting and painting operations.
  • Perform coating work in confined spaces, tanks, voids, and other restricted-access shipboard areas following safety procedures.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality and specification requirements.
  • Control costs and use materials efficiently within assigned work areas.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Follow simple and complex instructions and adapt to changing job site conditions.
  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance and meet production schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on workload and project needs.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3+ years of industrial painting, abrasive blasting, or marine coating experience preferred.
  • Experience in shipyard, marine, or heavy industrial corrosion control environments strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation standards, coating systems, and application techniques required.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and follow strict safety and environmental procedures.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attendance, reliability, and work ethic.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, tanks, and elevated shipboard areas.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including but not limited to respirators, protective suits, gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Ability to work in wet, dusty, and industrial shipyard environments.

Tool Requirements:

The following tools are required and must be provided and maintained by the employee:

  • Tool bag or toolbox
  • “5 in 1” painter's tool
  • Large wire brush
  • Flashlight
  • 25 ft tape measure
  • Utility knife (box cutter)
  • Wire cutter
  • Adjustable wrenches (10” & 12”)
  • Flat tip screwdrivers
  • Channel-lock pliers

Work Schedule & Hours:

  • Full-time position averaging 40–56 hours per week, including weekends as required.
  • Overtime and extended hours may be required based on project demands.
  • Flexibility and reliability are essential.
