Firefighter I

Under supervision on an assigned shift to fight fire to protect life and property, participate in fire prevention activities, fire company inspections, operate and maintainfire trucks, firefighting and rescue equipment, ambulance and fire station; and to perform other related work as required.

Incumbents perform the full range of firefighting duties in the protection of life and property and under general supervision. Duties are performed under emergency conditions frequently involving considerable hazard.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class "C" license with Ambulance Driver Certificate issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession of a responsible driving record.
  • Possession of valid Fresno County EMT-1A certificate or Paramedic license prior to hire date.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid BLS Healthcare Provider Card and valid ACLS Card for Paramedics.
  • Possession of Certificate of Completion from the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) prior to hire date.

Education:

  • Demonstrate the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance (graduation from high school or its equivalent will fulfill this requirement).
  • College level Fire Science Courses is highly desirable.

Physical characteristics:

See well enough to read small print, gauges, instruments and distinguish shades of colors; sense smell to detect toxic gases, smoke and unusual odors; mobility to kneel, crouch, bend and climb ladders; dexterity to use small tools, strength to lift and carry equipment weighing up to two hundred (200) pounds with assistance; stamina to perform strenuous labor for long periods of time and work under stressful and emergency situations.

Willingness to:

Work overtime, variable shifts, weekends and holidays; work under adverse or hazardous conditions, with proper safety equipment, in heat, cold, dampness, fog, heights, dust, noise and odors; be on duty for 48-hour period of time at station; maintain a clean, neat appearance and wear a uniform.

Examples of duties:

  • Respond to alarms.
  • Lay hose lines.
  • Assists in the operation of engine pumping equipment.
  • Hold nozzles to direct stream of water on fires.
  • Raise, lower and climb ladders.
  • Perform ventilation, conduct overhaul, salvage, and clean-up operations.
  • Rescue persons endangered by fire or other hazards.
  • Provide treatment for victims at the scene of an emergency, and during transport to a hospital via ground and/or air ambulance.
  • Render advanced and basic life support services consistent with Fresno County protocols, policies and procedures.
  • Keep records and make reports concerning emergency medical care procedures.
  • Participate in required training programs.
  • Maintain fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.
  • Perform lubrication and oil changes, make minor adjustments and maintain gasoline and oil supply for assigned vehicles.
  • Operate radio-telephone equipment either on vehicle or in the station.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair work on communication and fire alarm equipment.
  • Answers general questions from the public and assists in other community projects and programs;
  • Clean station quarters and equipment;
  • Maintain a clean and orderly condition in and about the firehouse;
  • Study Fire Department rules and regulations, fire hazards and fire prevention inspections and weed abatement duties;
  • When available and necessary, may be required to respond to fire calls during non-duty hours;
  • When qualified, may be required to serve as acting Fire Engineer on a temporary basis;
  • May drive a fire truck;
  • May be required to work over-time or irregular hours.
  • And other related duties of a Firefighter I as required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Knowledge of emergency medical techniques.

Ability to learn the geography of the area, firefighting methods and techniques, the operation and mechanics of firefighting equipment, the location of hydrants and mains and major traffic and fire hazards, analyze fire and driving situations and to adopt effective course of action, think and act quickly in emergency situations, understand and follow oral and written directions, deal courteously and effectively with the public, learn and maintain proficiency in EMT IA practices and techniques, meet and maintain standards of adequate physical endurance and agility. Speaking the Spanish language is highly desirable.
