Salary InformationAnnual Salary: $55,375.20 – $70,718.40Hourly Rate: $26.62 – $34.00Plus earn up to almost 30% more within the first 2 years!General OverviewThe Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry‑level, full‑time position with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Employees serve a critical role in the overall success of the ADOC by performing correctional work in state prisons, overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates. Correctional officers participate in the custody, transport, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in correctional institutions following ADOC administrative regulations and job‑specific training. Officers must be alert, decisive, demonstrate good judgment, and serve the citizens of the State of Alabama with honor and integrity.Responsibilities of a Correctional OfficerStand watch in halls or wall towers to control inmate movement.Supervise inmate work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, recreation areas; instruct on assignments; check inmates in and out.Inspect quarters for safety, sanitary conditions, and contraband; search inmates and visitors.Maintain constant alert, report unusual conditions and disturbances; inspect doors, fences, and security equipment.Make regular and unscheduled inmate counts and constant checks on those supervised.Complete reports and keep records of work progress, inmate behavior, infractions, and unusual occurrences.Drive transfer vehicle and maintain safety equipment.Explain rules, procedures, and available services to inmates; assist with personal problems, education, vocational opportunities, and work assignments.Observe inmate behavior and adjustment to the environment; submit evaluation reports.Instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and etiquette.Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED certificate (copy required during hiring).19 years of age or older.Provide one of the following during hiring:Valid certification of having passed the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers (also called ACT WorkKeys). – OR –Proof of possession of an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university (copy required).Applicants previously certified by APOSTC are not required to take the BAT, provided they have been active within the last ten (10) years.Special RequirementsU.S. citizen at the time of appointment.Valid driver's license from state of residency.Meet APOSTC requirements, designated agency training, and other specialized training during probationary period, including completion of a 10‑week training program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma, Alabama.Participate in a pre‑employment physical assessment.Successfully complete a background investigation, including fingerprint‑based criminal history background check and drug screening.
