Job Summary
The Firefighter/EMT plays a crucial role in safeguarding the community by providing both firefighting and emergency medical services. This position involves responding to emergencies, protecting lives and property, and delivering critical care when it matters most, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in every situation.
Education/Training/Experience Requirements
- High school diploma or General Education Degree.
- Basic Structural Firefighting Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection is required.
- Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the state of Texas.
- A valid "Class B" CDL Texas driver's license.
Essential Job Functions
- Responds to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other emergencies, performing fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical care.
- Maintains the Fire Station, equipment, and vehicles in a state of readiness, performing inspections, minor repairs, and needed corrections.
- Participates in drills, seminars, and training to stay current on firefighting techniques and relevant laws.
- Drives fire trucks and emergency vehicles as required, while assessing traffic hazards, apparatus placement, and monitoring radio transmissions.
- Establishes safety zones and ensures adherence to safety protocols during incidents.
- Engages in public fire education, station tours, and presentations to schools.
- Assumes higher-level responsibilities when needed and performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- The City's geography, organization, policies, procedures, and ordinances.
- Local, state, and federal fire safety laws, codes, and regulations.
- Modern firefighting methods, fire suppression, prevention, and investigation techniques.
- Advanced and basic life support, pre-hospital care, and the operation of firefighting and medical equipment.
- The streets, routes, and medical facility locations within the City and surrounding areas for efficient emergency response.
Skills in:
- Thinking clearly and using independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations while following verbal and written instructions within a chain of command.
- Proficient lifesaving, firefighting techniques, and water rescues, using appropriate PPE, including SCBA, in dangerous environments.
- Maintaining a professional appearance, providing excellent customer service, and working effectively within a team.
- Effective communication, self-accountability, and proficiency in computer operations and software.
- Safeguarding confidentiality and integrity when handling sensitive matters.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The employee must have the ability to lift, carry, push and/or pull greater than 100 pounds, and may require infrequent lifting of greater than 100 pounds. This position is exposed to extreme elements including extreme heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, noise intensity level, moving mechanical parts/hazards, dirt/dust, and odors. Continuous outdoor and indoor activity, frequent sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, twisting upper body, climbing, exposure to extreme heat, cold, noise, mechanical hazards, fume/odor hazards, toxic waste/material hazards, etiological agents, violent situations, and communicable diseases. Possibility of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, materials and inclement weather while in the field. Constant use of protective personnel equipment including but not limited to footwear, eyewear, and use of reflective clothing is required.
This is a physically demanding position that requires performance in all levels of physical exertion. Must complete a physical agility test. Shift scheduling is required.
