Correctional Officer / Corporal Agency: State Department of CorrectionsJob Description Maintain the security, control, and custody of inmates in a state adult correctional facility as a Correctional Officer or Corporal.Responsibilities Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of activities and maintain security of assigned areas.Supervise inmate work crews, escort inmates to work sites, and inventory all equipment, weapons, tools, and keys.Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories, and work areas; observe inmate activities and movements, and manage inmate conduct, work, and discipline.Maintain order and discipline during programs, meals, and recreation periods; inspect living areas, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials.Operate security equipment, conduct inmate counts, perform searches for contraband, and enforce institutional rules and regulations.Prepare written documentation and reports on inmate behavior, status, and movement.Participate in escape and apprehension teams; respond to riots and fires.Level Descriptors Correctional Officer Initial training as a correctional officer cadet; responsible for routine duties and interpretation of post orders.Corporal Full performance duties including maintaining discipline and security among inmates, executing post orders, and leading teams.Education and Experience Minimum age: 20 years (subject to maximum age limits).Educational requirements: 30 semester hours from an accredited college/university, a high school diploma, or an equivalent GED with successful completion of a training course approved by the Department.Corporal candidates: Additional 12 months of experience in correctional or security work with a governmental or private corrections agency.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies Fundamental English usage, basic math, reporting writing, firearm use and care, restraint methods, and self‑defense techniques.Ability to evaluate situations, exercise alertness, act effectively in emergencies, follow instructions, gather and organize facts, and produce clear reports.Effective communication and relationship building; proficiency with firearms; conflict assessment and management within inmate populations.Special Requirements Fitness assessment, pre‑employment and annual physical examinations, valid driver's license, and drug testing.Availability to work any assigned shift or day of the week and additional shifts as required.Eligibility to serve as a peace officer, subject to training and screening requirements, including psychological or physical testing and basic police course completion.Pursuit of no disqualifying criminal history as outlined in state and federal statutes.Positions within this classification are considered safety sensitive.Equal Opportunity Employment The State of Oklahoma is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of genetic information, race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability.#J-18808-Ljbffr
