Network Operations Center Engineer (TS/SCI)

Job Description

Administers and maintains network and server resources in support of routine and mission-focused operations; resolves reported and detected incidents to ensure the smooth operation of the network and attached systems. Applies advanced consulting skills and/or extensive technical expertise, full industry knowledge. Conducts and manages monitoring of overall system health across the enterprise. Develops innovative solutions to complex problems. Works without explicit direction; mentors and may supervise team members.

Key Role Description:

Performs real-time monitoring and maintenance operations of network device, server assets, and mission critical systems, enterprise services, and networking infrastructure across multiple physical sites on disparate networks. Serves as Tier III support to escalate and resolve technical issues on operational network environments. Collaborates across multiple engineering disciplines, resolving network incidents to ensure optimal network operation center performance. Builds, configures, tests, hardens, and decommissions Windows and Linux servers. Conducts in-depth research into vendor-specific technical documentation, system event logs to identify root causes and provide expert recommendations to resolve long-standing issues. Configures interfaces on Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, IIOS-XR, and NX-OS devices. Develops/modifies zone-based firewall policies on Juniper SRX Firewalls. Conducts firewall changes, creates or troubleshoots F5 iRules, manages DNS entries and port security. Logs and tracks all work products in ticketing system, recording applied diagnostic techniques used to complete the tasks. Develops and maintains comprehensive documentation for all troubleshooting procedures, patching plans, and required fix actions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree AND; 5+ years directly related experience or Master's degree and 3+ years directly related experience. Years of experience may be accepted in lieu of degree for certain roles. Certifications may be accepted in lieu of a degree for certain technical roles.
  • Experience with an Operations and System/Network Administration role, performing O&M, troubleshooting of existing systems, and ability providing some system engineering and system integration support
  • Knowledge of networking (routing and switching, firewall management, and client connectivity issues), system administration (Windows and Linux experience both valuable), security posture assessment and remediation
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across multiple teams and disciplines, clearly communicate and track reporting requirements, quickly gain expertise on a variety of new systems and applications, manage multiple simultaneous projects, coordinate with both internal and external teams
  • Firm grasp of common TCP/IP ports and protocols (DHCP, DNS, SMTP, SNMP, SSH, LDAP, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model and relevant troubleshooting steps for layers 1-4
  • Experience developing and enhancing IT troubleshooting processes and standard operating procedures
  • Understanding of Active Directory structure and Group Policy Objects
  • Ability to quickly and clearly communicate both verbally and in writing across multiple platforms
  • Certification: 8570 compliant IAT level 2 certification

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with monitoring solutions such as SolarWinds, Infoblox, Splunk, or Cisco ISE
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies and process engineering
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues involving network configuration, server configuration, and application configuration
  • Ability to document processes and lessons learned
  • Ability to research new and emerging technologies and document recommendations
  • Ability to extract and document user requirements
  • Experience with virtualization, including VMware and VDI
  • Experience with task automation or system orchestration via PowerShell, RHEL, Ansible
  • Knowledge of vulnerability and STIG scanning tools, including Nessus, SCC Tool, ACAS, and Tanium
  • Experience with basic network administration, including switchport configuration, zone-based firewall policy management, DHCP support, and DNS management
  • Experience with managing enterprise applications such as Microsoft Exchange, JIRA, Microsoft SCCM/MECM, and Skype for Business
