Fire Watch Officer (Safety Monitor)
Location: Salem, Oregon Pay Rate: $17.00/hour Schedule Options:
- Monday – Friday, 6:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- Monday – Friday, 5:00 PM – 1:30 AM
Position Summary
The Fire Watch Officer is responsible for maintaining a constant presence in designated areas to detect and prevent fire hazards. This role ensures safety compliance by conducting routine patrols, monitoring risks, and responding quickly in emergency situations.
Core Responsibilities
Safety Monitoring & Patrol
- Conduct continuous patrols of all assigned areas, including stairwells, basements, and unoccupied rooms
- Perform patrol checks approximately every 15 minutes, especially in occupied or high-risk buildings
- Remain alert for any signs of smoke, heat, fire, or unsafe conditions
Hazard Prevention
- Ensure all emergency exits, hallways, and stairwells are clear and accessible at all times
- Verify fire doors remain closed and functioning properly
- Identify, report, and escalate any potential fire hazards immediately
Emergency Response
- Immediately contact emergency services (dial 911) in the event of a fire
- Activate the building's fire alarm system if available
- Notify and assist occupants in safely evacuating the premises
Equipment Management
- Maintain constant access to a portable fire extinguisher
- Demonstrate proper knowledge and ability to operate fire safety equipment
Documentation & Compliance
- Accurately log each patrol, including time, location, and observations
- Document and report any hazards, incidents, or irregularities
- Ensure all logs are complete, timely, and compliant with safety regulations
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Ability to walk/stand for extended periods
- Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow safety protocols
- Prior safety, security, or fire watch experience is a plus
Work Environment
- Requires continuous walking and monitoring throughout the shift
- May involve indoor and outdoor conditions depending on site
- Must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations
