Fire Prevention TraineeCity of Arlington – Fire Prevention – Full TimeUnder general supervision, performs routine inspections of new and existing buildings and fire protection systems to ensure that local ordinances and State laws pertaining to fire and life safety are maintained. Able to determine fire origin and cause as a Fire investigator and compile investigation results and prepare accurate, detailed reports when necessary, obtain warrants, and present cases in courts.Essential Job FunctionsConduct certificate of occupancy and fire prevention inspections to ensure compliance with fire and life safety, and other codes.Assist in conducting acceptance testing on fire sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and other fire protection systems and features.Respond and assist fire companies on complaints or inspections.Communicate with property owner or manager regarding hazards or code violations and make recommendations for resolution.Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure corrections are made and issue citations as necessary to enforce the fire code when other efforts to gain compliance have failed.Conduct residential inspections including foster home, assisted living, mental health/mental retardation, and courtesy home inspections.Teach and assist with various public education venues.Examine sites of fires to determine their origin and cause by utilizing knowledge and experience in firefighting and fire investigation techniques and equipment.Other Job FunctionsBe on-call for after‑hours inspection for a week at a time.Compile log and prepare daily reports of work performed for departmental use.Perform related duties such as researching specific Fire Code interpretation applications, participating in public speaking engagements on fire prevention subjects and testifying in court cases concerning code violations as necessary.Perform data entry of inspection violations into current inspections software program.Attend both local and out of state training programs for days/weeks at a time as needed.Prepare and provide courtroom testimony.Minimum QualificationsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities RequiredKnowledge of state and local laws, regulations and procedures pertaining to fire and building codes.Knowledge of the concepts and symbols used in mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages and decimals, including hydraulic calculations.Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.Skill in reading and interpreting fire prevention policies and procedures and relating them to physical applications.Skill in understanding and applying basic mechanical concepts.Ability to organize daily work schedule and work alone.Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to seeing, sorting, carrying, calculating, writing and climbing to and from extreme heights.Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds.Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, subject to fume/odor, dust/mites, chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards.Qualifying Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma.Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License, Class C.Obtain Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Fire Inspector Certification within one (1) year of employment.Employment Screenings RequiredCriminal Background CheckCJIS Fingerprint Background CheckDrug & Alcohol TestingHealth Performance Evaluation/Physical ExaminationMotor Vehicle RecordCity of Arlington is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
