SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction from an appropriate level manager or administrator, provides technical support to faculty and students by ensuring that health science simulation labs and equipment are properly maintained, set up, and ready for use. This position supports the delivery of realistic, hands-on learning experiences for students through simulation-based education. The technician plays an integral role in maintaining equipment, overseeing simulation scenarios, and supporting both faculty and students during lab exercises.
May receive functional and technical work direction and training from faculty and/or higher-level staff.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in the Laboratory Technician class are distinguished from the Senior Laboratory Technician by the level of responsibility assumed. In comparison to the Senior Laboratory Technician, positions at this level are assigned to less complex labs, have less exposure to hazardous or otherwise dangerous materials, and limited involvement in budget activities and ordering supplies and equipment. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Set up, prepare, and maintain simulation labs and equipment for instructional use, ensuring everything is in working order for scheduled classes and simulations; assist faculty with the integration of simulation into the curriculum and with the setting up of simulation scenarios; assist instructors in developing and using instructional materials including simulation equipment; prepare study sheets, visual instructional aides, and sample exercises and exams.
Assist faculty in conducting and controlling simulation exercises, ensuring that the correct simulation environment is created for each scenario; operate and monitor simulation software and equipment during live simulations, adjusting settings and responding to issues as they arise in real time; ensure smooth execution of simulations, including managing and manipulating patient mannequins, props, and other resources during scenarios; troubleshoot technical issues during simulation exercises and work to resolve problems swiftly to ensure minimal disruption to instructional activities.
Provide assistance to students, instructors, and staff on a variety of lab and course related matters; review student work in progress; provide hands-on assistance to students during simulations, helping them understand the use of equipment, technology, and the correct protocols for various scenarios; ensure student compliance with lab policies, procedures and safety precautions; demonstrate proper care and cleaning procedures for lab equipment; demonstrate safety and emergency procedures in class and lab situations.
Maintain accurate records of simulation activities, including scheduling, equipment usage, and student participation; assist faculty and staff with preparing reports related to simulation activities, equipment maintenance, and supplies; assist in organizing and preparing simulations for evaluations or accreditation reviews, ensuring compliance with educational and regulatory standards.
Maintain, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs on equipment used in health sciences simulations; monitor and perform routine checks and preventative maintenance on equipment within the assigned area to ensure proper functioning; assist with coordinating with external vendors, technical support, or other service providers for equipment repairs and technical support as needed.
Monitor and track of equipment, medical supplies, and other materials used in the simulation labs; ensure timely replenishment and proper storage of supplies and equipment used in simulations, maintaining a system for checking in and out materials; participate in the ordering and maintenance of supplies, materials, and equipment; store, discard and rotate materials according to standard procedures; receive, assemble, and test new equipment.
Ensure that all simulation labs and equipment are clean, organized, and comply with institutional and regulatory health and safety standards, including infection control protocols and student safety guidelines; implement and enforce safety procedures during simulation exercises to ensure a safe learning environment for both students and faculty; maintain awareness of new health and safety regulations relevant to simulation-based education and participate in making necessary updates to lab practices and protocols.
Operate a variety of office equipment and machines; learn to use modern technology as necessary to perform duties; utilize electronic technology to correspond with others and to maintain assigned calendars, schedules, and appointments; utilize various computer applications, software packages, and databases; prepare, maintain, and generate reports. Participate in updating the program website, as well as relevant social media sites, as required.
Participate in professional development opportunities to improve technical and simulation knowledge, including attending and participating in workshops, webinars, and conferences; stay current with trends and advancements in health sciences simulation technologies and educational practices; maintain current knowledge of the regulations, policies, and application requirements and eligibility criteria for assigned program; ensure compliance with School, College, and District policies and procedures as well as local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and laws related to the assigned area; maintain working knowledge of standard operating procedures within the area of assignment; uses District, College, State, and Federal regulations, policies, and procedures to provide accurate information to students, staff, faculty, and others; abide by all confidentiality practices required by department, state, and federal policies, laws, rules, and regulations; participate in incorporating new developments, as appropriate, into programs.
Assist in the recruitment and retention of students within the assigned area; assist with designing and distributing promotional materials and assisting in promotional events on- and off- campus.
Assist in the selection of work-study students and/or Student Workers; provide functional and technical direction and training to work-study students/Student Workers assigned to the program.
Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that promotes creativity and professionalism; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty, as well as various outside groups to ensure efficient, effective, and correct implementation of program objectives.
Attend a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, presentations, and training sessions as required; maintain compliance with mandatory trainings and certifications as directed by supervisor; attend and participate in diversity, equity and inclusion trainings and events.
Respond to routine and specialized questions and requests information; answer phones; relay messages for faculty and staff.
Perform related duties as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to two years of college level course work in a health science-related field, simulation technology, or a similar discipline
Experience:
Two years of experience working with technology or simulation in a health care related field.

Work schedule: Monday - Friday (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM) - Schedule and shift are subject to change in accordance with the department's needs
