Registered Nurse

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurses to provide comprehensive, patient-centered care to Veterans at VA facilities across the United States. This is an open continuous announcement for multiple VA locations nationwide. Registered Nurses may be appointed on a permanent or temporary basis and may work full-time, part-time, or intermittent schedules depending on facility needs.

Location: Multiple VA locations nationwide

Salary: $38,871 - $228,000 per year

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct and indirect patient care in accordance with established nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and identify patient needs.
  • Develop individualized care plans in collaboration with the health care team, Veterans, and families.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
  • Monitor patient responses and take appropriate action in accordance with VA guidelines.
  • Educate Veterans and families on health conditions, medications, treatment plans, and self-care strategies.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete electronic health record documentation.
  • Use critical thinking to anticipate and respond to changes in patient conditions.
  • Escalate clinical concerns and initiate appropriate interventions as needed.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to support coordinated patient care.
  • Follow safety protocols and infection control practices.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and uphold Veterans' rights and ethical standards.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and quality improvement initiatives.

Specialty Areas May Include:

  • Critical Care: ICU, SICU, Recovery, Operating Room, and Emergency Room settings involving complex patient cases, advanced monitoring, life support, and rapid intervention.
  • Outpatient Care: Primary Care, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and Mental Health settings focused on health promotion, disease prevention, chronic disease management, and patient education.
  • Inpatient Care: Medical/Surgical, Mental Health, and Community Living Center settings providing direct care for hospitalized Veterans with medical, surgical, or psychiatric conditions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen. Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited in accordance with VA policy.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must be a graduate of a professional nursing program approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE, or otherwise meet VA nursing education requirements.
  • Must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Must be subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Drug testing is required for this position.
  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Must complete all application requirements and online onboarding requirements.
  • Must participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program as required for VA health care personnel.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period.

Grade and Salary Determination:

  • Education, scope of practice, and nursing experience determine the selected candidate's grade and salary.
  • VA Nurse grade and level are determined using VA qualification standards, including practice, Veteran/patient-driven care, leadership, professional development, and evidence-based practice or research dimensions.
