Applicants will work at their selected facility with a Field Training Officer until the academy begins. Academy Start Date: August 3, 2026. Lodging and meals are provided.Basic Purpose Positions in this job family maintain security, control and custody of inmates in a state adult correctional facility.Typical Functions Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintain security of an assigned area or post.Provide security and supervision over inmate work crews; escort inmates to work sites; inventory and control equipment, weapons, tools and keys.Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas; observe inmate activities; manage inmate conduct, work and discipline.Maintain order and discipline in programs, meals and recreation periods; inspect living areas and facilities for contraband; prepare incident reports.Operate security equipment; control movement of inmates, staff and the public.Conduct inmate counts; perform searches; enforce institutional rules and regulations.Prepare written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement.Participate on escape and apprehension teams; respond to riots and fires.Level Descriptors Correctional Officer : Basic level, cadet training and on-the-job training in security and custody duties; interprets and executes post orders.Corporal : Career level, full performance level as a correctional security corporal; maintains discipline and security; interprets and executes post orders.Education And Experience Correctional Officer: Requirements include minimum age (20), and possession of at least 30 semester hours from an accredited college, or a high school diploma/GED with completion of a Department-approved training course and CERTification by POST/CLEET or during first six months. Successful GED completion per Oklahoma standards.Corporal: 12 months of correctional or security experience for a governmental or private corrections agency.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies Knowledge of English usage, basic math, reporting writing, firearms handling and maintenance, restraint methods, self-defense, inmate discipline, and psychology of inmate behavior. Ability to evaluate situations, act quickly in emergencies, follow instructions, prepare clear reports, communicate effectively, maintain working relationships, maintain firearms proficiency, and manage conflicts among inmates.Special Requirements Pass minimum testing or professional evaluation; pre-employment and annual physicals as required by the Department of Corrections.Possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment; may require travel.Subject to drug testing and ability to work any shift or day as needed.Employees may be designated as peace officers and must meet training and screening requirements to complete a basic police course or be certified as a peace officer; training includes physical conditioning, self-defense, and OC spray.Legal eligibility checks: no sex offender registrations; no moral turpitude convictions without pardon; no disqualifying felony or domestic violence findings.
