Traffic Signal Technician
Under general supervision, the Traffic Signal Technician performs skilled work related to installing, maintaining, operating, programming, and troubleshooting a diverse range of traffic control devices and communications equipment.
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performs general maintenance on traffic control devices and equipment by aligning signal heads, cleaning video detection camera lenses, and installation of radio communication and preemption devices.
Monitors and troubleshoots malfunctions and other issues with traffic signal equipment; completes repairs or replaces parts as appropriate.
Pulls wire overhead and underground to add new equipment or replace damaged equipment; digs out trenches to install conduit materials and wiring.
Assists other City departments as needed by operating a bucket truck and participating in the installation, maintenance, and repair of elevated camera, lighting, and radio communication equipment.
Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work is performed throughout the City of Victoria and requires exposure to inclement weather conditions, traffic hazards, and high voltage. May be required to climb ladders, work at heights of 50 or more feet, and lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
High school diploma or GED equivalent AND two (2) years of electrical traffic system installation and maintenance; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Valid Driver License
Class B Commercial driver's license or obtain license within six (6) months of hire
Traffic Signal Technician and Work Zone Level I certification or obtain certification with one (1) year of hire.
Must obtain a Level II Traffic Signal Technician certification within three (3) years of hire.
Relevant laws, regulations, safety practices, and MUTCD guidelines.
Installation, maintenance, and operation of traffic control and electrical systems.
Use of tools, equipment, and methods for electrical and traffic control work.
Reading and interpreting technical manuals and schematics.
Work organization, prioritization, and deadline management.
Effective communication and professional interaction with others.
