Correctional Officer – Oklahoma Department of Corrections Salary: $44,680.90 (Correctional Officer) – $46,924.80 (Corporal)Academy & Training Applicants must attend an 8‑week live‑in academy beginning October 12, 2026, located in Oklahoma City. The academy runs Sunday 6:00PM through Thursday 6:00PM, with lodging and meals provided. Before the academy starts, candidates will work at their selected facility with a Field Training Officer.Location Positions are available at all state adult correctional facilities. Facility assignments are based on the preferences listed in the initial application.Responsibilities Basic Purpose: Maintain the security, control, and custody of inmates in a state adult correctional facility.Provide security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintain security of an assigned area or post.Supervise inmate work crews; escort inmates to work sites; inventory and control all equipment, weapons, tools, and keys.Patrol yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories, and work areas on an assigned shift; observe activities and movements of inmates; manage inmate conduct, work, and discipline.Maintain order and discipline during programs, meals, and recreation periods; inspect living areas, facilities, and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; report incidents.Operate manually or electronically controlled security equipment to regulate movement of inmates, staff, and the public.Conduct inmate counts; perform searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforce institutional rules and regulations.Prepare written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status, and movement.Participate on escape and apprehension teams; respond to riots and fires.Level Descriptors Correctional Officer: Basic level; assigned as a correctional officer cadet and receives formal training in security and custody duties. Responsibilities include supervising inmates in various situations, patrolling, interpreting post orders, and performing routine duties upon completion of statutory training.Corporal: Career level; assigned full‑performance responsibilities for providing security and control of inmates. Includes maintaining discipline and security within and outside the facility and executing post orders.Education & Experience Minimum age of 20 years.Either 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high‑school diploma/GED plus completion of a training course approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training within the first six months of employment.For Corporals: 12 months of experience in correctional or security work for a government or private corrections agency.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Fundamental English usage and basic math.Reporting writing.Firearm use and maintenance.Proper restraint methods and techniques.Self‑defense methods.Discipline objectives for restrained inmates.Psychology of inmate behavior.Evaluation of situations and adoption of effective courses of action.Alertness and rapid effective action in emergencies.Following oral and written instructions.Gathering, organizing facts, and completing clear, concise reports.Effective communication and relationship building.Firearm proficiency and conflict management within the inmate population.Special Requirements Satisfactory completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation through Human Capital Management.Satisfactory completion of a pre‑employment and annual physical examination.Valid driver's license at the time of appointment.Drug testing.Willingness and ability to work any shift, including weekends and additional shifts as required.Possible designation as a peace officer, requiring additional training, psychological and physical testing, and eligibility to complete a basic police course.Compliance with all legal restrictions related to sex offender registration, moral turpitude convictions, non‑violent felonies, misdemeanors involving domestic violence, and dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.Certain positions are designated as safety sensitive under state law.Equal Opportunity Employment The State of Oklahoma is an equal‑opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of genetic information, race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability.
