Fire Protection Engineer PE Location: Charlotte, NCType: Full-Time / RegularPosition Summary Clark Nexsen is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer. The role focuses on project execution for a variety of multi‑discipline and single‑discipline facility design projects, handling all aspects of fire protection engineering services for commercial and government facilities.General Responsibilities Perform all aspects of fire protection design services: conceptual studies, programming, schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents under the direct supervision of a Senior Fire Protection Engineer or Department Director.Work on a multi‑discipline design team.Meet with clients to prepare and validate scope of work.Prepare marketing and presentation materials as directed.Obtain guidance from Senior Fire Protection Engineer and Department Director to resolve technical and coordination issues and conflicting criteria.Direct and supervise support staff assigned to the project, especially when unusual or difficult problems arise.Perform fire protection services during the bidding process, including preparing addenda, amendments, and opening and tabulating bids.Handle construction‑phase services: field visits, answering RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings.Comply with the company's quality control practices and procedures.Respond to and take direction from Department Director, Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Directors, and senior management.Collaborate with architects, engineers, interior designers, and landscape architects.Participate in team meetings and coordinate efforts with other team members.Direct, supervise, and train junior fire protection staff.Mentor and monitor the professional development of junior staff.Project Responsibilities Perform Senior Fire Protection Engineer tasks as directed.Serve as Design Manager on assigned projects.Create scope and fee proposals for fire protection elements of multi‑discipline and single‑discipline projects.Conduct project code analysis for review.Select and layout fire protection systems, including consideration of alternative systems.Prepare accurate, complete, and code‑compliant drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction document submittals.Develop details of building system components.Review calculations and work products from fire protection EITs, graduates, or designers.Review all drawings produced by CADD technicians.Develop discipline specifications for review.Coordinate drawings with technical specifications and with other disciplines.Incorporate responses to QC and Gray Team comments into project documents.Assist in responding to RFIs, Dr. Check comments, etc.Review and respond to CA submittals.Perform discipline QA/QC review on assigned projects.Adhere to discipline budget and schedule.Required Skills Understanding of sustainable design principles and design practices; LEED AP accreditation is desirable.Additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA are encouraged.Active participation in professional organizations such as NSPE, SFPE, NFPA is desirable.Familiarity with design/production and fire protection analysis software to understand capabilities and limitations and to support staff.Proficient in MS Office and discipline‑specific design software.Required Experience Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program or a post‑graduate degree in the field is preferred.Fully licensed Fire Protection Engineer in at least one U.S. state or jurisdiction.4+ years of experience as a lead designer or Fire Protection Engineer on federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education, or similar projects, including Design/Build and CM at Risk delivery methods.Working Conditions At JMT, we prioritize a healthy work/life balance and offer a flexible hybrid working schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed.
