Part-Time Firefighter

The Part-Time Firefighter is responsible for protecting life and property by performing firefighting, emergency medical services, rescue, and fire prevention duties. This position responds to emergency calls, participates in required training, and maintains fire department equipment and facilities. The role is ideal for individuals seeking to serve their community while working a flexible schedule. This is a Part-time position; hours vary based on department needs and emergency call volume.

Major duties include:

• Responding promptly and safely to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and other calls for service.
• Suppressing fires using appropriate firefighting techniques and equipment.
• Performing search and rescue operations in hazardous conditions.
• Administering first aid and basic life support until advanced medical help arrives.
• Inspecting, cleaning, and maintaining firefighting equipment, tools, and apparatus.
• Participating in ongoing training and drills to maintain certifications and readiness.
• Assisting in fire prevention efforts, including public education, building inspections, and safety demonstrations.
• Completing incident reports and maintaining accurate records.
• Following departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations at all times.
• Being available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as needed.
• Performing any other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

• Must have a High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• Must have a current and valid Firefighter I certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP).
• EMR certification.

Preferred qualifications:

• Firefighter II certification.
• EMT Certification.
• State EMT-B or EMT-P license.
• Previous firefighting or emergency response experience.

• Work is performed in emergency and non-emergency settings.

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles.

  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.

  • Light work that includes carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Medium work that includes carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Heavy work that includes carrying objects up to 100 pounds or more.
• Constantly:
  • Assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Other requirements/information:

• Must possess a valid and current Texas driver's license.
• Ability to pass physical fitness and medical examinations.
• The Webb County Drug and Alcohol Policy applies to this position. Pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, and a criminal background check are required.
• This position is not covered under Civil Service; however, all other Webb County policies apply.
