Paramedic Position

The purpose of this position is to perform responsible protective service work in fire suppression and technical work in providing emergency medical services.

Essential job functions include responding to alarms with fire company, laying and connecting hose anddirecting fog or water stream, raising and climbing ladders, using extinguishers, bars, hooks, line, and other equipment, making forcible entry into buildings, opening walls and other structures which are impeding the effective fighting of the fire, assisting in rescuing people from burning buildings, rendering first aid when needed, performing salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris, performing overhaul work as needed at all fire and rescue scenes, receiving fire alarms by telephone, radio or industrial alarm systems, and other emergency calls, driving and operating rescues, tankers less than 2,000 gallons, brush trucks, brush tankers, support vehicles and administrative vehicles, watching condition of motor and unit during operation and making necessary adjustments, performing general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire apparatus, equipment, station and grounds, making minor repairs to buildings and equipment, washing, hanging and drying hose, washing, cleaning, repairing, polishing, and performing tests on apparatus and other equipment, operating emergency medical vehicles responding to accident or critical illness emergencies, assisting in determining the extent of the illness or injury, assisting paramedics in the treatment of ill or injured persons, assisting in extrication, stabilization, and loading of patients, assisting with unloading and transferring patients, attending company drills and scheduled in-service training exercises, participating as required in all drills and training sessions, keeping current and up to date in all phases of job responsibilities through seminars and courses, conducting commercial fire prevention inspections and residential inspections under the supervision of a certified fire inspector.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, successful completion of Florida State Minimum Fire Standards Training, current Florida State Minimum Standards Firefighting Certification, current Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic License, sixteen (16) Hour Emergency Vehicle Operator Course approved by the State of Florida, Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross CPR for Professional Rescuer or CPR equivalent certification from an organization approved by the Bureau of EMS pursuant to 64J-2.038, Florida Administrative Code, and a valid Florida Class E Driver License.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures, knowledge of fire prevention and pre-planning strategies and techniques, knowledge of first aid methods and emergency medical techniques and procedures, knowledge of the street system and geography of the County, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public, ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, ability to maintain records and prepare reports, ability to perform prolonged work under adverse conditions, ability to learn a variety of firefighting duties and methods within a reasonable training period, mechanical aptitude and ability to learn and operate relatively complex equipment, manipulative skills, dexterity and hand-eye coordination in the operation of fire and emergency apparatus, tools, trucks, equipment and vehicles.

Physical demand requirements include very heavy lifting, frequent lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs, expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear, good eye sight for production or safety of self and others, physical agility in climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, crawling, and reaching, and exposure to extreme heat and adverse or hazardous atmospheres, as well as adverse weather conditions.
