Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and mayhave both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.Click here for more information on SRC for Firefighters (Primary/Rigorous) Responsibilities Provide medical care as emergency medical technician. Drive fire fighting equipment to and from scene of fire; position vehicles so that maximum utilization may be made of its facilities and equipment. Serve as a fully trained member of a fire fighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Operate alarm room equipment including radio and fire reporting facilities. Perform as a member of a team in controlling spills that may be of a hazardous and often times unknown substance. Perform fire protection inspections. Insure proper functioning of vehicle via routine check-ups and make minor emergency repairs during periods of dispatch. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue Operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and (4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess required certifications and they must be within the DoD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certification System, Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (FSPQS)/ProBoard or International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certified: Firefighter I Firefighter II Hazmat Technician New York State EMT Certification - Basic (or equivalent or higher) certification such as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (NREMT-B) certification. NOTE: You must attach a copy of the certification to your application. Proof of Age: As this is a primary/rigorous firefighter position, your application package MUST include a government issued document indicating your date of birth. Maximum Entry Age (MEA) The MEA for Firefighters is 37. Applicants not appointed by the last day of the month in which that individual reaches their 37th birthday shall not be appointed or assigned to these positions. Education Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
