This position with LAWA's Community Relations Division will plan and support LAWA at community and civic outreach events including tour programs, educational events, community fairs, expositions and other functions. This position will also represent LAWA at community and stakeholder meeting including chambers of commerce, philanthropic organizations, educational partners, neighborhood councils, and more. Applicants must meet the requirements of the City of Los Angeles, Principal Public Relations Representative position.

REQUIREMENTS/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university including 24 semester or 36 quarter units in public relations, journalism, or mass communication and three years of full-time paid professional experience performing public and/or community relations work and preparing and disseminating information using the press, radio, television, films, personal appearances, community events, social media, digital marketing, search engine optimization strategies, or other methods of mass communication; or Three years of full-time paid experience as a Public Relations Specialist with the City of Los Angeles.

Applicants may substitute experience as described above for the specific academic credit required in Requirement #1. Each year of professional paid experience in these fields may be substituted for completion of 12 semester units or 18 quarter units from the fields of study required.

Supplemental Questions:

1. Have you been a member of or interfaced with a community organization, such as a Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, or Rotary? How did you leverage your membership or interaction to support your organization’s goals for maintaining and improving community relations?

2. Describe a time when you coordinated an event with more than 100 attendees. What was your role in ensuring its success, and what lessons did you take away that could be applied for future events you coordinate?

3. What methods do you use to organize your workload on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis? Include any task or project management software you’ve used and explain how it has improved your ability to track and manage your workload.

4. Describe a challenging situation you encountered with an unhappy stakeholder. What steps did you take to address their concerns?

5. Describe any experience you have working with any environmental, racial justice or transit/mobility advocacy organizations. Specify the organizations and what communities they have a presence in.

6. What outreach or communication strategies have you used to engage historically underrepresented stakeholders, including low-income individuals, people with disabilities, youth, transit-dependent populations, and non-English-speaking community members?

Emergency Appointment

An emergency appointment is not a regular appointment. It is a temporary appointment which does not require that you successfully compete in the Civil Service examination process. The appointment may not exceed one year and must be terminated immediately when a regular appointment can be made from an eligible list. No emergency appointment can exceed one year. (City Charter Section 1013).
