DEFINITION

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents perform a variety of support work and client support services in Health Programs such as Immunizations, CHDP, MCAH, HIV/Aids Drug Assistance Program, Tobacco Control Education and Prevention, WIC, Child Passenger Safety, and Communicable Disease Case Management.
This class is distinguished from the Office Assistant class series in that Public Health Aides provides both office support and direct client services.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives immediate or general supervision from the assigned supervisor and/or manager, depending on areas of work assignments. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to assigned staff.

- Provides clerical and administrative support in a variety of health programs.
- Based on the program assignment, may transport children and adults for medical appointments and visits.
- Maintains a variety of program, financial, and statistical records.
- Processes bills and other documents.
- Posts information to program records.
- Assists with preparation and inventory of educational materials, special presentations.
- Assists with vision/hearing screening, clinics, and community outreach activities.
- Assists in obtaining urine specimens and analysis.
- Maintains patient appointment schedules.
- Assists with the planning and organization of patient clinics.
- Assists with the conduct of clinics, receiving patients, and taking background information regarding medical, social histories, and economic status.
- Prepares monthly cash statements.
- Operates computer systems used in the county.
- Organizes and enters data into various software, spreadsheets, and word processing programs.
- Performs a variety of general office assistance assignments.
- Teaches and demonstrates health practices for individuals and groups.
- Instructs clients in sexually transmitted disease prevention and follow-up.
- Provides training in immunization procedures.
- Assists clients in obtaining services and advocates for clients to access resources.
- May perform office support assignments such as care providers with resolving billing problems.
- May provide follow-up on client’s appointment, such as immunizations reminders and vision referrals.
- May answer the telephone, providing information, taking messages, and referring callers to other staff as appropriate.
- May determine basic client eligibility for program services by interviewing applicants.
- May teaches various health classes.
- May plan and implement group activities and programs to meet special client needs, as directed.

RETIREMENT - County employees are members of the California Public Employee Retirement system (CalPERS).CalPERS provides a defined benefit pension at retirement for County employees.The pension formulas and employee contribution amounts may vary by bargaining unit, date of hire, prior qualifying service, and classification. HEALTH AND INSURANCE BENEFITS - Medical, dental, hospital, vision, life and disability coverage is available to employees and their dependents. The County contributes $1,500 of the monthly premiums for the insurance plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL may be adjusted for current city or county government employees.
VACATION - 80 hours per year during the first five years of service, 120 hours per year after five years, and additional accruals based on years of service beyond fifteen years. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
SICK LEAVE - Accrues at a rate of 96 hours per year. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
HOLIDAYS- An average of twelve paid 8-hour holidays per year. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
SALARY - Lake County has an adopted salary schedule. The salary range for most classifications is in five increments with a provision for longevity increases. Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range.
SOCIAL SECURITY - County employees participate in Social Security.
CALIFORNIA STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE - SDI is available to some County employees.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLANS and CREDIT UNION MEMBERSHIPS are available to County employees.

LOCATION AND SIZE
Lake County is in Northern California, north of the San Francisco Bay Area.

The highest peak in Lake County is Snow Mountain at 7,056 feet in the wilderness area of the Mendocino National Forest.

HISTORY
Clear Lake is said to have been formed more than 2 million years ago. Mt. Konocti formed gradually through a number of volcanic episodes. Pomo Indians settled the area over 10,000 years before Spanish soldiers arrived in 1821. By the mid 1800s, the area was being settled by pioneers and Europeans. After being part of Mendocino, Colusa, and Napa counties, Lake County was formed on May 20, 1861. The county’s name derives from the many lakes in the area, most prominently Clear Lake. NATURAL WONDERS
Nature’s wonders abound in Lake County. Clear Lake is the largest natural lake in the state of California. Kelseyville Pear Festival
Held every year on the last Saturday in September in the quaint town of Kelseyville, the event features pear activities and pear packing competitions, cooking demonstrations and pear tastings, quilt show, arts and crafts, fine art show and sale, children’s activities, mule-drawn wagon rides, food, antique tractor exhibit, live music, a parade, and the “Pear Pavilion.” Lake County is the largest supplier of premium fresh pears in California. Since the first commercial Bartlett orchard was planted in the late 1880s, buyers have chosen Lake County Mountain pears.
