Summary
Courtroom Security Officer
Maintains courtroom security, directs parties to proper area, swears in witnesses and jurors and provides general assistance to the Judge. Provides general assistance to court participants on scheduling and procedural information. Escorts and provides for the needs and security of jurors. This is a casual position offering flexible scheduling up to 19 hours per week.
Position Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Opens the courtroom and ensures its readiness for court proceedings, directs parties to the proper area and provides schedule and procedural information to attorneys, jurors and others. Notifies jail of prisoners to be brought to court.
- Assists in maintaining security in the courtroom and throughout the courthouse. Monitors activity in and around the courtroom to ensure appropriate behavior.
- Escorts jurors to and from the courtroom, provides for their needs, and sequesters them as necessary. Delivers exhibits to jury room as requested, replays court audio/video, and provides related services.
- Calls cases into court and opens court by announcing entrance of the Judge.
- Locates attorneys needed for court proceedings.
Qualifications & Skills Needed:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Some college preferred.
Experience: Prefer candidates to have some related clerking or legal support experience within a law office or court.
Relevant Skills/Specialized Equipment Knowledge:
- Photographic, audio and video equipment
- Ability to use a Taser and chemical irritants.
- Ability to physically restrain individuals.
- Ability to utilize effective conflict management skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals in an agitated state and from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
