The Deputy Sheriff performs general law enforcement work for the Union County Sheriff's Office, focusing on the prevention and detection of crime and the enforcement of criminal laws of North Carolina. Employees must exercise initiative, independent judgment, tact, courtesy, and firmness in frequent contact with the public. The employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work.
Essential job functions include answering complaint calls, investigating crimes, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, performing community policing, patrolling assigned areas, enforcing traffic laws, serving legal papers, and completing case files.
Minimum qualifications require a high school diploma or equivalent, Basic Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission, and a valid driver's license. A bachelor's degree is preferred.
Physical demands include operating various law enforcement equipment, lifting objects up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 175 pounds frequently, and the ability to defend oneself from assault and restrain suspects.
The work environment is physically threatening, requiring employees to make life and death decisions.
