Sergeant

This position provides direct supervision to Campus Safety Officers assigned to various shifts. The role requires exceptional communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to promote campus safety. The Sergeant makes recommendations regarding hiring, training, performance evaluations, and scheduling. As a crucial bridge between leadership and the team, the Sergeant ensures that departmental operations align with the policies of the department and the College. The Sergeant performs all standard officer duties while taking on added supervisory responsibilities, responding to emergencies, and serving as the Campus Safety representative for campus meetings. This position reports to a Lieutenant and operates within the Department of Campus Safety, which operates within the Division of Student Experience and Enrollment Management (SEEM).

Essential Responsibilities

Supervision

• Mentorship & Leadership: Provide guidance, mentorship, and direct supervision to Campus Safety Officers.
• Performance Management: Provides feedback for performance appraisals, inspect employees for compliance with rules, and execute corrective actions for inappropriate behavior when necessary.
• Staffing & Scheduling: Ensure adequate shift coverage (including varied shifts for 24/7 coverage) and collaborate with officers for optimal service delivery.
• Team Harmony: Foster an efficient, ethical, and collaborative team that upholds the mission of the College.
• Chain of Command: Identify and report issues that may negatively impact the campus through proper channels.

Communications

• Briefings & Presentations: Lead officer meetings/briefings and deliver presentations to campus groups.
• Community Engagement: Work closely with the Moraga Police Department and fire services to establish effective collaborative relationships.
• Information Relay: Clearly communicate policy changes and expectations to rank-and-file officers.

Administrative

• Operations Oversight: Plan, assign, and review officer work; assist with time sheets; and assist in creating work schedules, including coverage for special events.
• Investigations & Reporting: Supervise incident responses, investigate staff complaints, and prepare comprehensive, clear, concise, and timely reports.
• Policy Development: Draft and submit departmental procedures and policies for approval when necessary.

Patrol

• Security & Response: Conduct security patrols and routine checks across 68+ campus buildings and structures.
• Emergency Management: Respond to all alarms, medical emergencies, and crimes, liaising with the Moraga Police Department when necessary.

Residence Life Services

• Student Support: Maintain frequent contact with students, support Resident Assistants, Residence Directors, and Brothers in residence halls.
• Escalation Management: Assist the Office of Community Life (OCL) with escalated issues involving residents and guests.

Campus Services

• Access & Monitoring: Open and secure facilities, monitor and control campus alarm systems, and provide dispatcher backup.
• Auxiliary Services: Provide campus escorts, motor vehicle assistance (jump starts, lock-outs), and room lock-out services.
• Customer Service: Solve complex requests and deliver high-quality customer service during difficult situations.

Experience and Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Criminal Justice/Administration of Justice, related field, college educational experience, or graduation from an accredited California Police Academy highly preferred.

Experience: Minimum of six (6) months as an SMC Campus Safety Officer OR two (2) years in police/security work (US Military, security, or law enforcement). At least one (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

• Proficiency in standard software (MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, email, and web), and the ability to learn job related software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong knowledge of crime and fire prevention techniques.
• Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and two-way radios.
• High physical aptitude: must be capable of walking, running, standing, lifting, bending, twisting, and potentially restraining individuals.
• Required to wear a uniform and work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, nights, and overtime outdoors in inclement weather.
• Must possess high emotional intelligence and the ability to remain calm and professional in the face of conflict and hostility.
• Ability to work overtime during emergencies or major campus events and to maintain minimum staffing levels.
• Ability to work in a diverse environment and be open to different viewpoints and perspectives.
• Pre-employment screening may include drug screening, reference checks, physical examination, criminal history background checks, and a complete driving history check.

Licenses & Certifications:

Valid California Driver's License (Class C) with the ability to be bonded by SMC carriers; Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications; Current California BSIS Guard Card required.

POST P.C. 832 training certificate (40-hr) or the BSIS School Security Guard Training certificate (24-hr) preferred.
