Job Description
Under the supervision of the Housing Lieutenant:
- Is responsible for the overall supervision of security personnel assigned to the unit, and the supervision, custody and control of inmates assigned to the unit.
- Supervises job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
- Assists with preparation of employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc. assists in conducting briefings with officers at the beginning of shift.
- Keeps subordinates informed of all changes affecting inmates and operations.
- Makes random checks to ensure duty performance is within standards.
- Routinely inspects work areas and all security devices and equipment to ensure duty performance standards are met and that all devices, doors, and equipment are in proper working order.
- Assists in conducting counts.
- Investigates complaints.
- Performs duties of the housing lieutenant in his/her absence.
- Maintains OSHA and safety standards.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
- A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
- A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
- Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
