OverviewThe Library is seeking a Children's Librarian to empower children from infant through pre-teen to become creative thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and resourceful users of information. The Library aims to transform neighborhood libraries into centers of educational innovation and service and vital community hubs.Location: 53rd Street Library. Department: Branch Libraries. Compensation: $70,393 / year.ResponsibilitiesProvides reference services and resource recommendations using print, media, and digital resourcesCollaborates with the Youth Educational Services Department to develop and facilitate innovative programs to build literacy and a love of reading, including storytimes, early literacy programs, visual and performing arts programming, STEM programs, and summer reading events, in-library and in the communityPartners with the collection development team to shape and maintain the Children's collection, ensuring it is diverse, current, relevant, and meets community needsEngages children with the collection to follow their interests and discover new onesConducts outreach and develops partnerships with community organizations, schools, daycare centers, and groups that target children to promote the library's services and resourcesEncourages digital literacy and provides age-appropriate technology instruction to childrenDevelops and maintains content for social media platforms such as Library blogs, Facebook, and InstagramMaintains the layout and appearance of the children's space to be safe and invitingMentors library staff in preparing and presenting children's programsAssists with circulation, fines & fees management, reserves and opening/closing proceduresMay take responsibility for the facility, staff and operations in the absence of the Managing LibrarianMaintains knowledge of trends in children's literature and youth services through webinars, trainings, and professional readingPerforms related duties as requiredQualificationsRequired Education & ExperienceALA accredited Master's degree in Library and Information StudiesPublic Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New YorkRequired SkillsStrong commitment to public service and ability to work with a diverse patronageExperience creating and conducting innovative programs for Children and their parents/caregiversKnowledge and appreciation of children's literature and related resourcesExperience developing, maintaining and marketing Children's collectionsExperience building partnerships with local organizations and schoolsInterpersonal, oral, and written communication skillsAbility to work as part of a teamStrong organization and planning skills with ability to manage multiple projectsStrong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google applications, and familiarity with e-readersFamiliarity with online searching, social media, and reference resourcesManagerial/Supervisory ResponsibilitiesMay temporarily oversee the library in the absence of the Library ManagerPreferred QualificationsKnowledge of emerging library technologies and programming trends for children in urban public libraries is preferredCore ValuesAll team members are expected to embody the NYPL Core Values:Be Helpful to patrons and colleaguesBe Resourceful in solving problemsBe Curious in all aspects of your workBe Welcoming and InclusiveWork EnvironmentPublic service libraryPhysical DutiesLight lifting/moving requiredRemain in stationary positions for periods of timeDaily use of a computerPhysical Required?NoUnionLocal 1930FLSA StatusNon-ExemptSchedule35 hours per week to be scheduled during regular branch hoursSalary Statement: The New York Public Library is committed to pay transparency.
