Public Safety Officers (PSOs) protect and serve the community by responding to calls for service involving police, fire, and medical emergencies in a professional and caring manner, to enhance the quality of life for all people in the City of Kalamazoo. Balance Life and Career Public Safety Officers (PSO) assigned to patrol, work 12-hour shifts. During a 28-day rotation, PSOs are scheduled to work 14 days and have 14 days off (to include 2 weekends off per month) Compensation Free Training plus hourly wages Excellent Benefits/Pension Spanish Language Bonus Residency Bonus Student Loan Forgiveness Plan Police Academy Graduates (certifiable) -OR - Public Safety Recruits (no certifications and no experience required): Training Wage: $55,779.36/yr. Fully Trained: $68,643.12/yr. Top of Scale: $92,907.36/yr. Essential Qualifications: Applicants must be 21 years old by May 27, 2027, possess Character Fitness (good moral character), have a valid drivers license, be a U.S. Citizen, and meet all MCOLES licensing requirements. Must be available for full-time hire/start of training on January 19, 2027. Acceptable Training and Experience: Minimum of High School Diploma; Associate or higher preferred, or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the functions of the job.
