Overview

The Librarian - Youth Services is under the supervision of the Managing Librarian, provides enthusiastic, professional Librarian services with extraordinary customer services skill at the assigned location. This position manages all aspects related to collection development including evaluation, selection, and withdrawal of Youth collections. Librarian - Youth Services provides Readers Advisory and Reference Service to children and teens. Additionally, this position is responsible for developing and implementing programs for children and teens, both in person and virtually. In-person and virtual programming for children and teens promotes lifelong learning.

Responsibilities

• Provides easily accessible resources and high-quality learning experiences/interactions for children that fuel a love of learning

• Runs programs such as story time, book talks, puppet shows, craft activities, and library orientation for children through Young Adult in-person and virtually

• Works with other Youth Services Librarians to present special programs at any library location, organize community reading programs and develop programs for teachers and other childcare providers

• Ensures the needs of children and teens are considered in overall library planning

• Develops, understands, and adheres to library plan of service policies, plans, and grant requirements

• Assists patrons with computer, basic reference, and new technology issues

• Checks materials in and out, collects fees and fines, and performs all aspects pertaining to circulation, including shelving materials for patron access and performing opening and closing procedures

• Explains and performs intra and interlibrary loan procedures, document delivery, resource sharing, reserves, and other informational retrieval options

• Operates cash register and counts money

• Selects, organizes, and interprets information from an extensive variety of materials, including technical, literacy, and documentary statistical sources

• Provides problem solving and administrative guidance to ensure effective and efficient operations

• Acts as a Branch Manager in absence of Managing Librarian

• Manages all aspects of collection development for both reference and circulating collections

• Evaluates and develops collection according to community needs assessment

• Prepares subject bibliographies and reading guides

• Awareness of societal trends and influences related to subject areas as well as publishing and format trends

• Conducts inventories of library materials, analyzes usage, and maintains appropriate records in support of maintenance procedures

• Identifies items in need or repair and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of repair, replacement and/or withdrawal

• Recognizes items of true historic value and recommends their preservation and conservation for this library or for another collection

• Selects appropriate subject headings and call numbers for accurate identification and placement within the collection

• Partners with organization within the community that have compatible goals and objectives to serve children and teens and develop cooperative services and programs to extent and enhance children's and family programs in-person and virtually

• Maintains regular communication with agencies, institutions and organizations serving children, teens, and families in the community

• Consults on or produces branch promotional information

• Develops working relationships and joint initiatives with local agencies to identify community needs

• Directs effective day-to-day delivery of services/programs with staff and volunteers

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Exempt - Full Time

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduate Degree (MLIS or MLS) from ALA accredited school with focus on Youth Services. Applicants within one year of graduating will be considered

• 6 months to one year experience

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
