This position is responsible for investigating crimes, collects and preserves evidence, conducts interviews, and interrogations and prepares cases for presentation in court.RESPONSIBILITIESResponds appropriately to critical situations; applies proper police procedures.Investigates crimes.Prepares incident, and arrest reports.Contacts victims and conducts interviews, investigations and interrogations in compiling criminal cases.On call assignments for investigative response as designed by schedule.Processes crime scenes.Serves arrest warrants and criminal summons.Processes prisoners; takes fingerprints and photographs.Conducts follow-up investigations on case assignments.Prepares written reports of cases assigned.Serves subpoenas.Searches for suspects, witnesses, missing persons and lost property; makes arrests for criminal violations.Presents evidence and testimony in court hearings of prepared cases.Investigates narcotic and vice activities.Writes, execute, and serve search warrants.Participates in community-oriented policing activities.Performs other related duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTSFour (4) years of sworn law enforcement experience.Possession of an Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate, or a comparable professional law enforcement certification from another state as determined by the Rocky Mount Police Department.Demonstrated knowledge of criminal investigative principles, practices, and techniques, including interviewing, evidence collection and preservation, case preparation, report writing, and search warrant preparation.Preferred QualificationsPrior criminal investigations experience.Possession of an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, or a comparable advanced professional law enforcement certification from another state as determined by the Rocky Mount Police Department.Associates Degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or a related field from an accredited college or university.SKILLSKnowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.Knowledge of law enforcement vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology.Knowledge of criminal investigation tools and techniques.Skilled in the interpretation and application of federal, state, and local policies, codes, and laws.Skilled in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.Skilled in preparing clear and accurate reports.Skilled in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.Skilled in operating computers and other standard office equipment.Skilled in interpersonal relations.Skilled in oral and written communication.SUPERVISORY CONTROLSThe Investigative Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.GUIDELINESGuidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; department policy memoranda; Police Department Rules of Conduct and Duty; and North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.COMPLEXITYThe work consists of related law enforcement duties. Potentially life-threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.SCOPE AND EFFECTThe purpose of this position is to assist in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and to the effectiveness of department operations.PERSONAL CONTACTSContacts are typically with other City staff; court officials; representatives of other law enforcement agencies; crime victims; suspects, prisoners, and inmates; and members of the general public.PURPOSE OF CONTACTSContacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is typically performed while sitting in a patrol car, at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to potentially life-threatening situations.
