Seeking a POLICE OFFICER
General Summary: Under the direction of supervisory personnel, the Lighthorse Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement officer responsible for preserving the peace; preventing, detecting, and investigating criminal activity; enforcing tribal ordinances and applicable state and federal laws; and protecting life and property within the jurisdiction of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Jurisdiction includes Indian Country as defined in 18 U.S.C. 5 1151, and any other areas where authority is lawfully exercised through commission, cross-deputation, mutual aid, or intergovernmental agreement. The officer performs patrol, enforcement, investigative, and community policing duties while respecting tribal sovereignty, cultural values, and community relationships. Duties are performed in accordance with departmental policies, applicable laws, and professional law enforcement standards.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
- Perform the full range of sworn law-enforcement duties, including patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, arrests, scene security, evidence handling, report preparation, and court testimony.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; assess situations and take appropriate enforcement, assistance, or protective actions.
- Enforce tribal ordinances and applicable state and federal laws within assigned jurisdiction.
- Conduct preliminary and follow-up criminal investigations; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; and collect, preserve, and document evidence.
- Make arrests, issue citations, execute lawful orders and warrants, and transport detainees as authorized.
- Prepare clear, accurate, and timely reports, affidavits, and case documentation.
- Perform community policing activities, including public assistance, outreach, and relationship-building.
- Operate departmental vehicles, firearms, and law-enforcement equipment safely and responsibly.
- Maintain required law-enforcement certifications, firearms qualifications, and training standards.
- Comply with shift work, overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
- Execute and enforce orders of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Courts and other lawful judicial processes.
- Perform other sworn law-enforcement duties consistent with the responsibilities of a Police Officer as assigned.
Use of Firearms and Force
- This is a sworn law-enforcement position. The Police Officer must be capable of carrying and, when required, using firearms and applying force consistent with applicable law, departmental policy, and training standards.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to perform physically demanding law-enforcement duties, including standing, walking, running, lifting, restraining individuals, and defensive actions.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations, including extended or irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Ability to function effectively in high-stress, rapidly evolving, and potentially dangerous environments.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions, including violent or combative individuals, critical incidents, traffic hazards, and adverse weather conditions.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field, OR must obtain the degree within two (2) years of appointment in accordance with MCN Title 50 requirements.
Experience: No prior law-enforcement experience required
(Entry-level sworn position; prior experience may be substituted where applicable.)
Special Skills:
Ability to follow departmental policies, procedures, and lawful orders consistently and professionally.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and ethical conduct in all law enforcement activities.
Must have a valid Oklahoma drivers license.
Preferred Requirements:
Education: Associate's degree or higher in Criminal Justice or a related field
Experience: Prior law-enforcement, corrections, security, military experience. or successful completion of a recognized Indian Police Academy or Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Special skills:
Ability to exercise sound judgment and make lawful decisions under stress and in rapidly changing situations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with the public, other officers, and supervisors.
Ability to observe situations accurately, documents events clearly, and prepare timely, accurate reports.
Additional Licenses Required: Certifications and licenses: Must possess and maintain Basic Police Officer Certification through CLEET (CLEET/FLETC certified).
Must meet minimum age requirements for sworn law enforcement officers under applicable law.
