Summary
Library Intern Position
Under administrative supervision, the purpose of this position is to provide customer service to patrons and maintains the library's materials and collection, and assists with library programs and other duties as assigned. This Intern position is working up to 10-19 hours per week evenings and weekends.
Essential Job Functions
Aids in the circulation of library materials including shelving and shelf maintenance.
Processing of new items.
Provides backup assistance at the circulation desk.
Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of all reference and circulation policies and procedures.
Aid in organizing city archives.
Assists with library programs and displays.
Promotes library services and programs through the development of displays and bulletin boards, flyers, bibliographies, and other types of publicity.
Compiles statistical information on areas of service.
Assists Reference Librarian in reference questions, answering phones, and general public interaction.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a High School Diploma or GED and currently enrolled in an accredited university pursuing a Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.
Bilingual English-Spanish highly preferred.
Knowledge of and experience using integrated library system software and online resources and databases.
Knowledge of and experience using personal computers, e-books, mobile devices, etc.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of library patron information.
Ability to perform basic reference work, material selection, cataloging, and classification.
Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationship with peers and supervisor.
Benefits
For city employees who are regular part time (10-19 hours per week) or seasonal hired placed on City payroll, the following benefits are provided:
PARS - Public Agency Retirement System: the employee contributes 6.2% each paycheck to this retirement system and the city provides 1.3%. The employee does not pay into Social Security. All of the employees contributions may be withdrawn upon separating service from the city. The City's contributions will not be paid unless the employee retires under the system.
Part time or seasonal employees are not eligible for any paid leave or other benefits.
Part time or seasonal employees are limited to working only 1,000 hours per 12-month period, unless the seasonal is project based for a specific period of time which is typically less than 12-months.
