Legislative Coordinator – Austin, Texas

The Office of the Governor is looking for a Legislative Coordinator (Program Specialist VI) to work in the Legislative Affairs Division.

The Office of the Governor works to build a healthier, safer, freer, and more prosperous future for all Texans. We are located primarily within the Texas State Capitol Complex in Austin.

The salary is $6,666.67 – $7,083.34 a month ($80,000.04 – $85,000.08 a year). Benefits include medical insurance, sick leave, and vacation leave. Also, State of Texas employees are eligible for a defined retirement plan. Learn more:

This position performs highly advanced (senior-level) consultative services and technical assistance work. Work involves assigning and tracking pending legislation for the OOG. Specific tasks include a broad range of responsibilities including legislative, programmatic, and administrative duties. Must be able to work in a fast-paced work environment and work flexible work hours as needed.

  • Plans and prioritizes a variety of technical, training, research, planning, policy, program assessment, and administrative activities related to legislative affairs.
  • Greets and assists visitors including officials from other agencies.
  • Answers the telephone, routes messages; evaluates and answers questions.
  • Assigns, routes, and tracks pending legislation and amendments promptly.
  • Assists with public inquiries regarding pending legislation.
  • Researches constituent requests and composes response letters to legislators and constituents.
  • Monitors agency legislative packages and floor proceedings.
  • Monitors bill status and works with advisors on analysis.
  • Provides information to legislators concerning issues important to the Governor.
  • Attends legislative committee meetings and writes status reports.
  • Assists with developing proper protocols and procedures for communicating with legislators and staff.
  • Schedules and coordinates meetings and appointments; anticipates and prepares information for meetings.
  • Reviews and organizes mail for the Legislative division; highlights important information.
  • Types letters, memos, and reports; proofs and edits for grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and clarity.
  • Maintains complex bill tracking system and assembles legislative bill histories.
  • Drafts bill analyses on pending legislation and drafts enrolled bill analyses memoranda.
  • Develops, schedules, and conducts training.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business administration, government, political science, or related field;
  • Advanced knowledge of the legislative process; and
  • Prior experience working in and around the Texas Legislature.
