Ideal Candidate

Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills are essential to this position. The Engineering Technician II provides front-counter assistance to the public and performs paraprofessional engineering work in both office and field settings. Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, duties include surveying, drafting, performing minor inspections, issuing encroachment permits, and assisting with traffic, sidewalk, and other engineering programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provides front-counter assistance and interacts with the public.
  • Prepares construction drawings, maps, plans, engineering computations, and spreadsheets using computer-aided drafting (CAD) and other software.
  • Assists the Project Engineer in preparing project and contract documents.
  • Processes and issues permits; performs public right-of-way inspections and responds to complaints related to encroachment permits.
  • Processes construction progress payments, invoices, and submittals.
  • Assists with traffic studies and surveys, including data collection and analysis and preparation of reports.
  • Researches property and easement information.
  • Maintains traffic calming devices and creates work orders.
KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS
Knowledge of: Principles of algebra, geometry and trigonometry and their nomenclature; symbols, methods, practices, techniques and instruments used in drafting and survey work; City geography; and Bluebeam, ArcGIS, and CAD.

Ability to: Collect and analyze data; communicate effectively with the public and City Staff.

Skills: Operating surveying and drafting instruments and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: College level graduate in the engineering field and/or sufficient experience to perform the above duties doing similar work.

License and Certification: Certification as an Engineering-in-Training (EIT) is highly desirable.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to sit for long periods of time at desk or drafting table; to stand for long periods of time at counter and in field; to walk several blocks at a time in field; to be able to read/follow instructions and carry on detailed, technical conversations on the phone and at the counter; to crouch, kneel, stoop, squat to perform a variety of tasks; to climb hills; to lift manhole covers; to work outdoors in occasional adverse weather; to have sufficient vision, hearing and stamina to perform the above functions; to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and the public; to deal with wide variety of people with tact and diplomacy; to keep accurate records.

Benefits

Paid Sick Leave: In accordance with the California Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act (effective January 1, 2024), employees accrue one (1) hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. Accrued sick leave may be used after 90 days of employment. Employees may use up to 40 hours of paid sick leave during a one-year period. Unused sick leave has no cash value.

Vacation: Part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within one year of their hire date accrue vacation at the rate of one (1) hour for every 52 hours worked, up to a maximum of 16 hours per year. Employees may not accrue more than two years' worth of vacation at any one time.

Additional Information: No other benefits are provided. This is an at-will, casual position and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. Work hours are based on operational needs, there is no guarantee of hours, and employment may end at any time.

HOURS

Approximately 20-30 hours per week, with weekday availability required.
