Job Description

Overview

Planner I is the entry-level position within professional planning. This position reviews and coordinates the processing of planning applications, including but not limited to, platting, variances, zoning, Beachfront Construction Certificates, Dune Protection Permits, and the planning review of building permits, for conformance with codes, ordinances, statutes and regulations. This position also addresses general customer inquiries related to planning whether in person or via phone or email.

Responsibilities

• Review and coordinate the processing of normal to moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, ordinances, statues, and regulations

• Assists in the evaluation of rezonings, ordinance amendments, site plans, special use permits, variances, and other proposals

• Assists in resolving citizen and customer issues related to planning

• Prepares and presents detailed reports on development proposals to government bodies

• Collects a variety of statistical data and prepares reports/maps on topics such as census information, land use, tax base data, and occupancy rates

• Acts as a liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in developing plans

• Coordinates community review of public and private development projects with the assistance of senior staff

• Conducts field evaluations and assessments, to include staking public hearing notice signs on subject properties

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Exempt - Full-Time
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS)

• No prior experience is required

Licenses and Certifications

• ICC Zoning Inspector within twelve (12) months of hire date

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
