Job Description

Overview

The Inspections Supervisor leads and supports field inspection staff by coordinating assignments, providing technical training, and ensuring consistent adherence to codes, policies, and procedures. This role ensures inspection quality through daily oversight, audits, and site evaluations, while also assisting with complex inspections and resolving escalated issues. The Supervisor collaborates with stakeholders and the Deputy Building Official to implement new codes, policies, and strategic initiatives that advance the department's mission

Responsibilities

• Supervises field staff, coordinates work assignments, and provides training and instruction for subordinate inspectors

• Oversees daily inspection activities by reviewing the work of Inspectors to ensure performance standards are consistently met, and inspection quality is maintained

• Conducts routine evaluations to verify compliance with departmental standard operating procedures, as well as city policies

• Performs quality control audits of completed inspections to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to regulatory requirements

• Spot checks construction at job sites for conformity with building plans

• Train and develop staff; provide technical expertise and recommendations for code processes

• Assists with more complex inspections to ensure compliance with code requirements

• May meet with architects, engineers, building owners and contractors to determine alternate methods of construction

• Investigates complaints, recommends corrective action, and resolves more complex or unusual issues

• Assist the Deputy Building Official with the adoption and implementation of new construction codes, city policies and procedures, adoption of new fees and execution of the city's and department's strategic initiatives

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

  • Exempt - Full-Time
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
  • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree (AA/AS); or 2 year technical certificate; or Master Electrician; or Master Plumber

• Four (4) years of experience

Preferred

• Two (2) years of experience in functioning managerial, supervisory or administrative capacity is preferred

Licenses and Certifications

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

• ICC Residential Building Inspector at time of hire

• ICC Residential Plumbing Inspector at time of hire

• ICC Residential Electrical Inspector at time of hire

• ICC Residential Mechanical Inspector at time of hire

• TSBPE Plumbing Inspector License within twenty-four (24) months of hire

Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

• Physical Exam: Yes

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
