This is an exciting opportunity to join the South East Technical Surveillance Unit (SETSU), where you'll play a vital role supporting investigations into serious organised crime and counter-terrorism operations. Working alongside specialist teams, you'll deploy cutting-edge technical solutions that help protect communities and bring offenders to justice. This is not your typical technical role. You'll be combining technical expertise, creativity and operational thinking to deliver specialist surveillance capabilities in some of the most complex policing environments. As an Operations Technician, you'll be at the forefront of specialist technical support, using advanced surveillance technologies to support operational objectives.Responsibilities. Planning and delivering technical surveillance solution. Deploying audio, visual, tracking and communications equipment in urban and rural environments. Providing expert technical advice to investigators and senior officers. Maintaining, testing and developing specialist equipment and systems. Producing evidential material for investigations and potential court proceedings. Conducting technical research and development to enhance future capabilities. Supporting operational activity across the South East and beyond when required1. Liaise with investigating teams to identify operational objectives and advise senior officers and others on the most suitable methodology to achieve them. Carry out planning, preparation of techniques and equipment to satisfy the objectives, developing risk assessments, method statements and technical feasibility studies. Brief senior officers/staff to obtain approval and suitable Authorities.2. Deploy, using covert methodologies, audio, visual, tracking, and sensitive technical equipment in response to operational and time critical situations in a wide range of urban and rural environments. Utilise innovative, adaptable and imaginative approaches, often in challenging environments and circumstances. Responding dynamically to any changes in operational scenarios, the role holder may be required to make critical operational decisions in time critical situations without supervision.3. Facilitate the means to procure expert and professional evidence or intelligence from technical surveillance equipment. Handle and prepare the product so that it is suitable for use in a court of law and attend to provide expert testimony if required.4. Ensure all work is carried out within the requirements of the legal framework. Analyse and assess all Authorities received to verify the correct level of endorsement for the equipment and methodologies requested. Liaise with NPCC, Sensitive Intelligence Unit and Force Authority Bureau to ensure compliance with current legislation.5. Maintain, repair, test, and deploy all front-end devices such as audio, visual, or tracking devices and ensure software/firmware updates and configuration changes are current. Ensure networking equipment (i.e. cellular routers, IP networking equipment, other wireless/wired transmission devices) are configured in conjunction with IT team maintaining an end-to-end solution.6. Provide guidance, advice, technical support, and training in the installation and use of technical equipment to non-technical staff.7. Complete administration procedures - records, input to databases and ensure compliance with RIPA and national standard operating procedures.8. Undertake technical research and development to maintain and advance SETSU capability in all areas of business.Key CompetenciesAble to demonstrate a working knowledge of Information Communication Technology and be able to evidence provision of successful practical technical solutions to complex problems.. Proven ability to work in a secure and confidential environment with the highest standards of integrity; able to recognise sensitive information and maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.. Proven ability to work remotely on own initiative and experience of working effectively as part of a team.QualificationsWe are seeking to appoint a candidate with excellent communication skills and up-to-date knowledge of relevant technologies with proven use of computer technology and Microsoft packages.The successful applicant will be HNC qualified in Electronics, Radio or Telecommunications (or equivalent).Knowledge and experience in three or more of the following:. Radio Frequency (RF) technologies, transmission, and propagation. Telecommunications. CCTV/Video Transmission. Audio principles. Tracking principles. IP Networking. Systems engineering/integration.
