DescriptionThe Vehicle Outfitter Specialist performs complex installation, maintenance, and repair work for the Sheriff's Department vehicles. Work involves the maintenance and repair of a variety of electronic systems and equipment. The employee is responsible for assisting in planning and research for acquisition and/or development of improved technical systems. This responsibility begins with maintaining the emergency equipment for all fleet vehicles, diagnosing equipment malfunctions, and acts as a primary resource for problem management and resolution.
Examples of Duties
Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots problems and performs mechanical repairs, as necessary, on various electronic systems and equipment, including, but not limited to, radios, video systems, computer equipment, electrical lighting systems on sheriff's vehicles including boats, and ATV’s; also install computer equipment on other department vehicles and radios on State vehicles.
Design and oversee new equipment installation on fleet vehicles.
Create and design light bar patterns and light flash patterns for enhanced officer safety.
Decommission vehicles going to surplus by removing all emergency equipment and badges; transferring all used surplus gear to auction site.
Processes warranty claims of defective products with Return Merchandise Authorizations.
Transports vehicles being sent to outside repair facilities.
Orders and receives parts and supplies for installations and repairs; maintains and updates vehicle inventory database.
Tracks all repairs and inventory on computerized tracking system; receives and maintains all work order functions and activity logs.
Communicates with departments and officers to diagnose problems existing with emergency equipment and vehicle.
Fabricates and modifies new and existing bracketry.
Assists in performing research and planning to facilitate enhancement, adaption, and/or acquisition of equipment, systems, software, etc.
Performs administrative duties and compiles data for special projects or reports, as assigned, ensuring completion by specified deadlines and in accordance with outlined goals and objectives.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School graduation or GED and a minimum three years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
ASE Certified L-1 (Advanced Engine Performance) Motorola Radio Basic Operator, ASE Certified A-6 (Automotive Electrical), and ASE Certified A-8 (Automotive Engine) preferred for this position.
Must be U.S. Citizen.
Applicants for this position must complete a fingerprint-based criminal history and background investigation and must meet all applicable CJIS and TCOLE requirements.
The following criminal history may result in disqualification from employment, appointment, or licensure, subject to any applicable waiver or review process authorized by law, CJIS requirements, or TCOLE rules:
- A felony conviction or qualifying felony deferred adjudication/community supervision;
- A Class A misdemeanor conviction or qualifying deferred adjudication/community supervision;
- A Class B misdemeanor conviction or qualifying deferred adjudication/community supervision within the previous ten (10) years;
- A conviction or qualifying community supervision/deferred adjudication for an offense involving family violence;
- Family Violence convictions or deferred adjudication;
- A current criminal charge for an offense that would constitute a bar to TCOLE licensure; and
- Other circumstances that result in the applicant being ineligible for required TCOLE licensure or CJIS access.
