Jazz Power Initiative is looking for an experienced jazz vocalist and educator to join our Jazz Power Youth Workshop as a Vocal Teacher Assistant for the Fall Training season. If you love jazz, understand its African American roots, and get excited about helping young people find their voices, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Reporting to our Vocal Director, you'll teach Saturday morning private and semi-private voice lessons and lead Jazz Power Fundamentals I, a hands-on class that introduces students to jazz culture, basic keyboard, listening and learning with the jazz masters, and improvisation. Our fall session also includes Wednesday classes in voice, movement, and storytelling, with some opportunities to support those sessions.

What You'll Do

  • Teach private and semi-private voice lessons focused on healthy singing technique and jazz style
  • Lead Jazz Power Fundamentals I, an experiential class exploring jazz culture, keyboard basics, listening, and improvisation
  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons within a structured weekly schedule
  • Collaborate closely with the Vocal Director and communicate with students and families

What You Bring

  • Experience as a jazz singer, with prior teaching experience in private, semi-private, and/or group voice lessons
  • Knowledge of the African American roots of jazz, voice function, and healthy vocal technique
  • Experience working with youth in a classroom or workshop setting, with strong classroom management skills
  • Familiarity with, or a strong interest in learning, the Jazz Power Fundamentals curriculum
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • A genuine passion for jazz, vocal music, and youth arts education

Schedule

  • Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., starting October 10
  • Orientation and training before the first session
  • Occasional Wednesday afterschool sessions
  • Must be available for the full Saturday fall schedule through December 16

Position Details

  • Seasonal independent contractor role
  • $20–$50/hour, depending on experience
  • Involves standing, moving around the classroom, and leading active, hands-on instruction
