Cost Accountant
MAJOR FUNCTION
The Cost Accountant will perform advanced cost accounting analyses to compare estimated costs to actual costs and prepare a variety of related budget reports.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

- Leads problem-solving efforts for assigned projects, collaborating with team members to identify and implement solutions.

- Takes initiative to identify and solve problems.
- Provides support and guidance to junior team members.
- Actively participates in the Odin safety program.
- Follows all safety rules and procedures.
- Can perform difficult and complex forecasting.
- Able to read through bid and schedule documents to forecast future costs.
- Can independently forecast with minimal information provided by project team to come up with accurate forecasts.
- Ability to verify forecasted costs align with committed costs, historic unit costs, and future expected productions.
- Can read and extrapolate relevant information from project schedules.
- Advance understanding of schedule in relation to cost and revenue.
- Can create basic schedule within Microsoft Project or P6."
- Advance understanding of accrual basis accounting.
- Advance understanding of committed costs in relationship to purchase orders, subcontract agreements, budgets, schedule and forecasting.
- Ability to track job cost to an extreme degree of accuracy with no supervision and minimal assistance."
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, & EXPERIENCE:
- 3-6 years’ experience in Cost Accounting.
- Degree preferred, years of experience and skills/ abilities in lieu of degree on a case-by-case basis.
- High level of proficiency with Excel formulas, tables, and advanced features.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Project and or Primavera P6.
- Advance proficiency within Viewpoint Vista program.
- Advance understanding of QC practices, procedures, and the concepts/importance of QC within cost control documents.
- Ability to fix and troubleshoot issues within cost controls programs.
- Ability to review and explain documents in depth.
- Strong understanding of the general sequence of construction for assigned projects.
- Strong understanding of the general equipment utilized within the services lines they've been exposed to.
- Advance understanding of project schedule, budget, and margin.
- Ability to create budgets for simple projects and change orders.
- Advance understanding of change orders and change in scope in relation to cost, revenue, forecasting and schedule impacts.
- Ability to do complex budget shifts and reallocations.
- Able to do above tasks with no supervision with extreme accuracy.
- Advance understanding of KPI and tracking and its relationship to schedule.
- Advance understanding of project contract in relationship to scopes of work, change orders and contract billing.
- Advance understanding of earned revenue and earned hours in relationship to progress.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with vendors, management, and other coworkers, both individually and in front of a group
- Regular use of the telephone and email for communication is essential
- Sitting for extended periods of time is common
- Hearing, vision, and speaking within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information, and to prepare or inspect documents
- No heavy lifting is expected, though exertion of up to 25 pounds of force may occasionally be required
- Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computers, calculator, copiers, and fax machines
- Good reasoning ability is important, must be able to understand and utilize management reports, memos, and other documents to conduct business
- Primarily an office position. Occasionally, site visits and field project visits are required. Travel to offices and projects in various locations around the country as needed. The following physical activities are often, but not always, associated with site visits:
- Must be able to stand or walk on a project site for extended durations
- When on project sites or if performing some types of work or activities, must wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including, but not limited to: earplugs, protective eyewear, gloves, hard hat, steel-toed work boots, and high visibility safety apparel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office setting and occasionally outdoors on a construction site.
The following environmental/atmospheric working conditions are commonly, but not always, associate with the performance of this position. The actual working conditions will vary.
- Job site environment, including, but not limited to, machines, tools, heavy equipment, chemicals, solvents, dust, and fumes
