Summary

About Rosalyn Yalow Charter School

Rosalyn Yalow Charter School is a K–5 public charter school in the South Bronx dedicated to providing a private school–quality education in a public school setting. With a low student–teacher ratio and a whole-child approach, including academics, chess, visual arts, singing, violin, and fencing, we are committed to closing the opportunity gap for our students. Named a 2020 Achievement Recognition School by the New York State Department of Education, Yalow ranks among the top 13% of schools statewide.

Role Overview

The Instructional Social Worker role is part of the Yalow ISW-to-Teacher Pathway Program, a structured career pipeline designed for Master of Social Work (MSW) professionals who aspire to become classroom teachers.

Through this program, ISWs begin as co-teachers in grades K–2, applying their social work expertise to support both the academic and social-emotional needs of students. At the same time, ISWs enroll in the RELAY Graduate School of Education residency program to earn teacher certification.

With hands-on classroom experience, mentorship, and professional development, ISWs gradually take on more instructional responsibility. Upon successful completion of the residency program, ISWs transition into lead teacher positions at Yalow, continuing their careers as educators grounded in both social-emotional learning and rigorous academics.

Starting salary: $78,500

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a co-teacher in a K–2 classroom, building instructional skills while supporting student learning.
  • Apply social work training to strengthen social-emotional learning, classroom culture, and student support systems.
  • Analyze student data and collaborate with colleagues to inform instructional practices and interventions.
  • Build strong relationships with families, students, and staff to promote holistic student success.
  • Maintain a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment aligned with Yalow’s high expectations.
  • Participate in Yalow’s three-week summer orientation and ongoing professional development throughout the school year.
  • Engage fully in the RELAY residency program, working toward teacher certification.

Qualifications

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) required (must be conferred before start date).
  • Commitment to completing the RELAY Graduate School of Education residency program.
  • Alignment with Rosalyn Yalow Charter School’s mission, core values, and belief in the potential of every child.
  • Passion for working with K–5 students, particularly in underserved or urban communities.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of adaptability, resilience, and a growth mindset.
  • Prior experience working with children in schools or youth-serving organizations preferred.

Why Join Yalow?
