AFSIM Modeler
Location: Reston, VA (Penn State Research Laboratory)
Clearance Required: Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
Duration: Direct Hire
Compensation: Up to $150,000/year
About the Role
We are seeking an AFSIM Modeler to support advanced defense modeling, simulation, and analysis initiatives in Reston, Virginia. In this role, you will build realistic virtual environments that help evaluate emerging military technologies, operational concepts, and future capabilities.
You will use the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling, or AFSIM, to create military systems, entities, scenarios, and behaviors that represent complex real-world missions. Your work will directly support capability assessments and studies used by Department of Defense decision-makers.
You will collaborate with military subject matter experts, pilots, engineers, technologists, and software developers to transform operational requirements into executable simulation scenarios. AFSIM is specifically designed to support scenario creation, mission-level analysis, capability comparisons, and virtual wargaming.
What You’ll Do
- Build and enhance military systems, entities, behaviors, and operational scenarios within AFSIM
- Develop simulations that model how military platforms and systems act, react, and interact during complex missions
- Partner with military SMEs, pilots, engineers, and technologists to translate real-world mission requirements into simulation environments
- Support study planning, scenario development, model implementation, simulation execution, and results analysis
- Evaluate emerging technologies, operational concepts, and military capabilities
- Work with software development teams to expand and improve modeling and simulation capabilities
- Develop new analytical solutions and workflows
- Present study results, technical findings, and recommendations to customers and other stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field
- At least two years of modeling, simulation, or analytical experience
- Hands-on experience building models, entities, scenarios, and behaviors within AFSIM
- Scripting or programming experience
- Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Science, Mathematics, or a related technical field
- Active TS/SCI clearance
- Experience with STK, Python, C++, R, or JMP
- Knowledge of U.S. or foreign military systems
- Experience supporting operational analysis, force design, capability assessments, mission analysis, or Department of Defense studies
