Assistant Structural Engineer

HAAS ENGINEERING, PLLC | Remote (Must reside in Upstate New York)

Location: Remote position, with periodic project meetings, site visits, and fieldwork across New York State. Candidates must reside in Upstate New York.

About Haas Engineering

Haas Engineering, PLLC is a structural and construction engineering firm based in Endicott, NY (Binghamton, NY) serving contractors, owners, and agencies on transportation, bridge, and heavy civil projects. Our work covers construction engineering for contractors, permanent bridge and culvert design, precast concrete design, structural inspection, and bridge load rating. The firm is led by a Professional Engineer licensed in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Texas, and Maine. We produce practical, constructible designs that are delivered on schedule and hold up to owner agency review.

Why Join Haas Engineering

  • Remote work: Work from home with the tools and support you need to do your best work.
  • Work-life balance: We keep workloads reasonable and schedules predictable so you have time for life outside of work.
  • Direct mentorship: You will work alongside the principal engineer every day and learn from real project decisions, not from the edge of a large organization.
  • See your work built: Our designs go straight to active construction sites or fabrication, and you will see how your calculations and plans perform in the field.
  • Broad technical exposure: Most early-career engineers specialize in one of these areas. At Haas Engineering, you will work in all of them.
  • Path to licensure: We support your progress toward the PE license through mentorship and diverse, qualifying experience.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer with 1 to 5 years of experience to perform analysis, design, and plan preparation for construction engineering and bridge projects.

Responsibilities

Perform structural engineering for contractor support work, including, but not limited to:

  • Bridge demolition plans
  • Bridge and culvert erection plans and rigging design
  • Temporary bridges
  • Bridge jacking and temporary support systems

  • Perform bridge and culvert design, inspection, and load ratings.
  • Collaborate with contractors on design-build projects.
  • Design precast and prestressed concrete elements.
  • Prepare calculation packages and plans in accordance with state DOT design standards and submittal requirements.
  • Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and owner agencies throughout design and construction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.
  • 1 to 5 years of civil/structural engineering experience.
  • EIT certification is not required but is encouraged.
  • Experience in construction or construction inspection is preferred.
  • Familiarity with New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) design standards and AASHTO LFD and LRFD specifications.
  • Proficiency with MicroStation, AutoCAD, Excel, Mathcad, Tekla Tedds, SAP2000, and other bridge design software.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Residence in Upstate New York, with the ability to travel to project meetings, site visits, inspections, and fieldwork across the state.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $70,000 to $90,000, depending on qualifications.
  • Paid Time Off and Paid Holidays
  • Medical and dental insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance.
  • Remote work.
