Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced System Administrator 4 to support the Virginia Department of Transportation's Transportation Operations Center. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in Linux (Red Hat) and Windows server administration, VMware virtualization, Active Directory, backup and recovery, and IT infrastructure support.

The successful candidate will help maintain reliable and secure IT systems, troubleshoot technical issues across multiple support tiers, manage server and desktop deployments, and support cybersecurity initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, configure, deploy, and maintain Linux (Red Hat) and Windows operating system servers.
• Provision, configure, and maintain server hardware, desktops, laptops, peripherals, and related infrastructure.
• Provide Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 technical support for hardware, software, and infrastructure issues.
• Administer Active Directory, user accounts, permissions, and access requests.
• Manage VMware virtualization environments and support virtual machine operations.
• Perform system monitoring, performance tuning, capacity planning, and resource optimization.
• Execute backup, recovery, file archival, and restoration procedures.
• Monitor system and application logs, scheduled jobs, server availability, and service anomalies.
• Troubleshoot connectivity issues between users, servers, networks, and IT resources.
• Install operating system patches, upgrades, administrative tools, and utilities.
• Investigate hardware and software failures and coordinate resolution with impacted teams.
• Maintain accurate system configuration documentation, architecture records, inventories, and maintenance logs.
• Document system changes and follow established Commonwealth policies, standards, and procedures.
• Support cybersecurity controls, threat hunting, threat mitigation, and security monitoring.
• Support GIS infrastructure and Asset Management applications as required.
• Assist with network equipment and audio-video/video management systems when needed.
• Deliver excellent customer service and communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• 3–5 years of relevant Systems Administration experience.
• 5 years of experience configuring and deploying Red Hat Linux and Windows servers.
• 5 years of desktop, laptop, and server hardware experience.
• 5 years of Active Directory administration experience.
• 5 years of VMware/virtualization experience.
• 5 years of backup and recovery experience.
• 5 years of help desk/technical support experience.
• 5 years of customer service experience.
• Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and multitasking skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least 2 years of cybersecurity experience.
• At least 3 years of hands-on experience with network equipment.
• At least 2 years of experience with video management systems.
• Experience supporting audio-video systems.
• Microsoft certifications or other relevant IT certifications.

Work Location and Engagement Requirements

• This is an onsite contract position in Staunton, Virginia.
• Candidates must be comfortable working onsite at the designated VDOT location.
• The engagement is offered on a 1099 basis at $35–$37/hour.
• Relocation and travel expenses are not reimbursed.
