(Job #546911) Administrator I, Campus Recreation Associate Director, Salary Range: $4,135 - $12,288 monthly. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan position in the Outdoor Adventures Department. This position is an Administrator I in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President. Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation, the Campus Recreation Associate Director has lead responsibility for the overall administration of the Campus Recreation Department including the operations and leadership of activities related to intramurals, drop-in sports, competitive sport clubs, Student Recreation Center, Campus Recreation Office in the RWC and HBAC, Outdoor Adventures, Aquatics, Leisure Classes and special events. In addition, the Associate Director will oversee and implement risk management policies, evaluate and implement new programs, oversee departmental budget, payroll, secure funding and other resources necessary to accomplish departmental goals. Supervision of approximately 100 student staff and three to five professional staff members (Coordinators). Responsible for directing day-to-day operations, customer service, maintenance, planning and implementing policies, programs, services and marketing recreation programs to the campus and off-campus community.
Key Responsibilities: 15% - Oversee Intramural Program and Supervise Intramural Coordinator - Planning, organizing and supervising individual, dual and team competition leagues for robust 2,000 participants per week.
- Organizing tournaments for intramural teams at the conclusion of league play.
- Student employment - recruit, hire, train, supervise and evaluate 40-50 students to officiate intramural sports.
- Verification and approval for approximately 45 student employee timecards (10-12 office student employees, 20-30 officials for intramurals, 3-5 intramural supervisors, 1-2 sport club coordinators, and an intermittently hourly, Athletic Trainer).
- Office supervision - recruit, train and supervise seven temporary student assistants and one graduate assistant.
- Oversee and train student interns when possible and available.
15% - Oversee Sport Club Program and Supervise Sport Club Coordinator - Responsible for coordinating, administration, and operation of sport club program.
- Provide leadership education, program meetings, program required training.
- Responsible for the oversight of competitive club programs, including league dues submittal, safety, & eligibility of all sport club members, oversight of travel applications and reimbursements, allocation of funds, driving background eligibility verification for club officers, practice, game scheduling through online system & officials scheduling, field preparation, supervision of games, for 15-19 sport club teams.
- Serve as liaison between coaches, students and administration.
- Represent sport clubs on university committees.
- Project and present annual operating budget to Associated Students and IRA.
- Oversee fundraising by providing training and educating club officers on how to conduct fundraising business on campus in cross campus unit efforts to ensure proper procedures are followed.
- Oversee compliance coordination for eligibility include hazing education, Title IX education, Alcohol and other drugs education, defensive driving background checks along with required character background checks of all coaches.
- Serve as institutional liaison between sport club governing bodies (leagues).
10% - Oversee Student Recreation Supervisor and Recreation and Wellness Center - Manage and Supervise Drop-in Recreation Program including but not limited to Open Gym, badminton, basketball, pickleball, and soccer.
- Develop and organized activities for students, faculty, staff and community.
- Supervise approximately 15 student assistants to participants and secure facilities.
- Project annual operating budget to Associated Students. Schedule and coordinate facilities for practices, games, drop-in activities and intramurals
25% - Strategic Planning & Contracts and Grants - Annual Submission and approval of the Associated Students (A/S) and Instructional Related Activity (IRA) budgets.
- Track and reconcile department expenditures including budgets: HM500, A/S, and IRA.
- Secures funding and other resources necessary to accomplish department goals, as well as create avenues for fundraising with cross campus units to align with the university.
- Collaboration with local businesses for sponsorships and donations. Develop, implement and oversee a comprehensive game operations plan for assigned intercollegiate sports including game-day activities, entertainment and event management including oversight of security, ticketing and parking systems.
- Conducts strategic planning and program development to identify and prioritize department activities.
- Analyzes local, state, and national policies and industry standards of importance and prepare reports, communication, and other documentation on the department’s priority issues.
- Monitors, contacts and negotiates terms and agreements with professional outfitters and agencies as needed.
- Apply for the California Division of Boating and Waterways grant. Works closely with the California Division of Boating and Waterways to ensure all grant requirements are met, pursuant to future grand money as appropriate.
- Oversees the allocation of grant funds from the California Division of Boating and Waterways.
- Investigates new funding sources through grants and donations.
- Familiarize self with trends and issues through national bodies related to recreation and outdoor activities, such as NIRSA & AORE.
30% - Oversee Outdoor Adventures Program Analyst and Field Coordinators - Identify, develop and manage certifications related to programming along with health, fitness, leisure and outdoor adventure activities.
- Oversee the application and compliance with permitting and access to public land, such as National Forest, State Parks, and National Parks.
- Oversee a full-scale aquatic equipment rental program, activities such as scenic tours, classes and group educational outings in connections with the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center
- Supervise staff for day-to-day operations.
- Generate revenue, and support the application for various grant opportunities in conjunction with Outdoor Adventures and the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center.
- Oversee and manage annual events including but not limited to Get Out and Play Day, National safe boating day and Paddling film festival world tour. Research and plan other events as applicable.
- Track and reconcile department budget and expenditures including payroll for Outdoor Adventures.
- Manage the research, purchase, upkeep and rental of outdoor equipment and the logistics of the equipment room.
- Oversee and develop maintenance and inventory procedures for all California Division of Boating and Waterways equipment
- Evaluate programs for compliance with safety and accident prevention procedures. Maintain records of incidence and accidents. Work closely with the Risk Management office on campus.
- Communicate and promote with the campus and local community information about special events, programming opportunities, facilities, and general information through posters, signs, newsletters, advertising, website and social media

- Ability to use database software and/or on-line software applications. Ie Fusion / 25 Live, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply expertise to complex programs and/or administrative specialties, including pertinent laws and regulations.
- Ability to understand problems from a broad, interactive perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive of and develop solutions.
- Ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive solutions.
- Demonstrated consultative skills in working with internal and/or external constituent groups.
- Professional experience working with a diverse population.
- An understanding of the dynamics of diversity in higher education, sensitivity to cross-cultural perspectives and experiences.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation Administration, Sports Management, Business Administration, Student Affairs or related fields. Must have at least four (4) years of supervision/management experience in student and/or recreation programming at a college level, marketing& promotions, policy development, public facility management, risk management and personnel management. or related field. Valid CA Class C driver’s license. First Aid and CPR certifications.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience engaging in NIRSA related programming and guidelines. Experience working with sensitive academic and medical student records. Experience interpreting and communicating complex University procedures, policies, information and ideas. Master’s degree. Wilderness First Responder certification. Other outdoor technical certifications like ACA or AMGA.
